About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Mountain Research Station is hiring an Agricultural Technician II with growth potential for a fulfilling career in agriculture. Our mission is to serve as a platform for agricultural research to make farming more efficient, productive, and profitable, while maintaining a sound environment and providing consumers with safe and affordable products. Our ideal candidate will have experience in horticultural crop production to include tomatoes, cucurbits, truffles, raspberry, blackberry and tobacco (burley and dark). This position will work in the Horticultural Unit and support animal agricultural production as seasonal demands may require. Major functions of this position are: • Routine tasks such as assisting with land preparation, planting, cultivating and harvesting various crops. • Landscaping task such as weeding and mowing. • Operation and basic maintenance of farm equipment. • Work may include other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • General understanding of horticultural crop production.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand labels on chemical containers.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to perform long periods of repetitive reaching, stooping, standing, bending and lifting of 50 lbs in a variety of work environments are required.
  • Must possess the following at the time of application or qualify for certification within twelve months of employment:
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (Interstate)
  • NC Public Operator Pesticide License
  • Forklift Driver Certificate from the Research Stations Division
  • Obtain medical clearance to wear a half mask or full-face respirator with cartridges.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in the general care and management of animals or crops, or laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
