About The Position

The UW-Madison, Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station (RARS) supports the research and outreach efforts of UW-Madison scientists, with primary focus on potato breeding and variety development. The person in this position will operate various types of farm equipment performing specialized research and general agriculture operation, including field operations, greenhouse production, and post-harvest evaluation. This position is critical to the maintenance of the potato breeding program at the Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate tractors, tractors with loaders, and/or skid loaders for agronomic functions such as soil tillage, fertilizer application, planting/seeding, or crop harvest.
  • Ability to perform general farm operations of loading and unloading materials and/or snow removal
  • Ability to perform general farm facilities maintenance or repairs.
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to set up, calibrate, and/or adjust farm equipment as required to meet research and field condition needs.
  • Experience with applying pesticides in an agricultural or research setting
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook to generate emails, letters, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Experience working with potatoes or any other agronomic crop

Responsibilities

  • Maintains organization of designated facilities and associated supplies, notifies appropriate entities of damaged materials or the need for supply replenishment
  • Operates, cleans, and repairs basic and complex agricultural machines and equipment to ensure safety and operable functionality and to adhere to established rules, policies, and regulations
  • Documents completion of duties according to established policies and procedures
  • Applies pesticides in accordance with best practices and established rules, policies, and regulations
  • Stages equipment and machines in preparation of agricultural activities
