About The Position

The Agricultural Commodity Grader position within the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service involves inspecting and grading fresh and processed fruits and vegetables to ensure compliance with U.S. Grade Standards. The incumbent will work at various inspection points, processing facilities, or area office labs, and may coordinate the work of other inspection personnel. This role requires significant travel and offers a permanent, full-time opportunity with a competitive salary.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • Must be registered with Selective Service if born male after 12/31/1959.
  • Must pass a background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Must complete a one-year probationary period unless previously served.
  • Must have a valid state driver's license at the time of application.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commodity grading or inspection of agricultural products.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Grade Standards for fruits and vegetables.
  • Ability to work independently and make critical decisions regarding product quality.

Responsibilities

  • Select samples from product lots of fresh fruits and vegetables according to prescribed sampling plans.
  • Inspect products to determine quality, condition, and compliance with U.S. Grade Standards or specified contract specifications.
  • Prepare inspection reports based on examination of products.
  • Draw and examine samples of finished products of processed fruits and vegetables to determine grade, condition, and wholesomeness.
  • Make observations to ensure compliance with sanitation requirements and regulations in plant facilities and operations.
  • Coordinate activities, schedules, and work assignments for other inspection personnel assigned to the plant.
  • Inspect raw product material to establish suitability for processing.
  • Conduct various audits and prepare audit reports.
