We are seeking a highly motivated, self-starting Research & Development Engineer to join the Agile Systems Engineering (ASE) Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. You will support the detailed electrical engineering design and systems development of a range of applications and autonomous systems operating across all domains (e.g., sea, land, air and space) domains. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply. You will: Work closely with senior engineers and subject matter experts on tasks associated with detailed design and implementation of electrical circuits, software, and firmware Link and power budget analyses; Define system control and data architectures Systems engineering activities spanning the typical DoD product development lifecycle Detailed design of electrical systems including circuit design, FPGA development, and low-level software development and integration Analysis of alternative solutions and trade-space analysis Requirements development and linkages throughout system architecture Modular system definition and development, and other detailed electrical engineering design tasks Test set development including modular hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test set development, aligning HIL and software-in-the-loop architectures, and model development Coordination across engineering disciplines with internal and external collaborators Occasional travel for stakeholder engagements and field test activities Work location is State College, PA.

  • Technical background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills

  • Bachelor's Degree - Engineering or Science
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • No prior relevant work experience required
  • U.S. citizen
  • Hands-on experience with electrical design, simulation, and test
  • Working with standard laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators
  • Code writing in several languages with emphasis on embedded coding
  • FPGA firmware development with VHDL and Matlab code generation
  • Familiarity with controls, simulation, and hardware-in the-loop test set development and operation
  • Model Based Systems Engineering training and experience
  • Familiarity with systems engineering fundamentals
  • Experience contributing as a team player
