About The Position

The Acoustics Project Lead (Marine Resource Scientist II) position at the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is a limited period role focused on managing and conducting fieldwork for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) projects. This position is part of a three-person management team and involves supervising a team of four Acoustic Analysts. The role includes overseeing project goals, timelines, and data quality, as well as representing DMR at meetings and conferences, publishing research, and fostering collaborations with external partners.

Requirements

  • Intermediary education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, engineering field, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in marine resource research and/or management.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous supervisory and/or project management experience.
  • Expertise in cetacean bioacoustics and PAM.
  • Prior experience with multi-day overnight offshore research cruises.
  • Experience retrieving, servicing, and deploying PAM moorings.
  • Experience in automatic detection performance evaluation, acoustic localization and tracking of cetaceans, acoustic density estimation, calculating species detection range, sound propagation modeling, and/or ambient noise analysis and statistics.
  • Experience with Raven Pro 1.6, Ocean Instrument SoundTraps, LFDCS, ArcGIS Pro, R, Python, and/or MATLAB.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and conduct fieldwork for passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) projects.
  • Supervise a team of four Marine Resource Scientist I - Acoustic Analysts.
  • Delegate fieldwork and acoustic analysis tasks to staff.
  • Set staff priorities and timelines.
  • Lead project meetings and oversee data quality assurance/quality control.
  • Conduct staff performance reviews.
  • Disseminate information about PAM projects at meetings and conferences.
  • Publish peer-reviewed literature related to PAM projects.
  • Make recommendations to DMR's policy group and Commissioner's Office.
  • Foster and manage collaborations with external partners for PAM projects.
  • Seek grant funding opportunities as appropriate.
  • Work across programmatic lines within DMR's Division of Marine Mammal Research or the Division of Ecology and the Environment.
