About The Position

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time Agency Attorney III in the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Office. Reporting directly to the Assistant Commissioner of EEO and the Director, the successful candidate will: With minimal oversight and exercising significant independent judgment, conduct investigations of complex EEO violations; conduct interviews of complainants, witnesses, respondents; gather relevant documents and prepare written summaries of investigations and closing memos to the Assistant Commissioner, including referrals to appropriate bureaus for action; research legal issues relating to EEO law; conduct EEO compliance inspections; when needed, conduct thorough intake interviews and draft detailed and timely intake reports; conduct EEO training for FDNY employees, EEO counselors, and FDNY units as needed; and assist in the development of EEO statistics and reports.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar, or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne
  • Must remain a Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of employment
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar
  • To be assigned to AL III, candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar

Nice To Haves

  • Prior investigative and/or litigation experience
  • Strong knowledge of Title VII of the Civil Rights Law of 1964
  • Strong knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Strong knowledge of New York State and City Human Rights Laws
  • Excellent writing, analytical, communications, and people skills
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in an independent, organized, and timely manner
