About The Position

Vermont Hills Family Life Center (VHFLC) is a mission-driven organization committed to supporting the healthy development of children and strengthening families across the Portland and Metro areas. Our after school programs are joyful, inclusive spaces where elementary-age children are safe, supported, and inspired to grow every day. We’re hiring two After School Program Leads to join our team at sites across the Portland and Metro areas. In this role, you’ll plan and lead engaging after school programming for elementary school-age children, support the growth of each child, and help create a safe, welcoming environment every afternoon. This is a part-time position with a consistent Monday–Friday schedule from the end of the school day through 6:00 pm. Requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and meet all initial and annual training requirements established by the State of Oregon and VHFLC policy. In addition, applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:
  • Option 1: At least 60 hours of experience working in a school-age program, plus 20 clock hours of training within the past five years in school-age child care — including 5 hours each in: Understanding and Guiding Behavior (UGB), Learning Environments and Curriculum (LEC), Human Growth and Development (HGD), and Program Management (PM).
  • Option 2: At least 240 hours of qualifying experience working with school-age children within the past five years in a certified child care center or comparable group care setting.
  • Option 3: An Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, Physical Education, Recreation, Human Development, Child and Family Studies, or Home Economics.
  • Option 4: Attainment of at least Step 6 on the Oregon Registry.
  • Have a strong understanding of child development and effective, positive guidance practices
  • Are an enthusiastic, caring presence that children and families feel comfortable with
  • Can lead and support staff while maintaining a positive, professional atmosphere
  • Communicate clearly and warmly with families, colleagues, and supervisors
  • Stay organized and calm while managing multiple priorities in a busy, active environment
  • Are committed to VHFLC’s mission, values, and equity-focused approach
  • Can lift up to 40 lbs, sit on the floor, bend, kneel, and stay active with children indoors and outdoors

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities and curriculum that promote the overall development and learning of school-age children
  • Maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment that encourages creativity, exploration, and social growth
  • Ensure all materials and activities are age-appropriate, inclusive, and culturally responsive
  • Establish consistent routines and use positive guidance practices that promote responsibility and respect
  • Provide active, direct supervision of your assigned group of children at all times
  • Supervise and support any assistant program leaders or volunteers assigned to your group
  • Respond promptly to children’s needs, including administering basic first aid and completing required incident reports
  • Communicate warmly and regularly with families about their child’s experiences and progress
  • Maintain accurate attendance, incident, and program records in compliance with Oregon licensing requirements
  • Participate in staff meetings, required trainings, and professional development activities
  • When the Program Coordinator is not present, ensure the program’s full compliance with all applicable state licensing rules and conditions
