About The Position

The AFP NC (Numerical Control) Programmer is responsible for developing and optimizing NC programs for Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) equipment used in the manufacturing of aerospace composite components. This role involves creating machine tool paths and ply layups based on engineering specifications and CAD models, ensuring efficient, precise, and repeatable composite manufacturing processes. The AFP NC Programmer collaborates closely with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure programming meets strict aerospace standards, enhancing productivity, material integrity, and quality control.

Requirements

  • In-n-depth understanding of AFP and composite manufacturing processes, including fiber steering, ply orientation, and laminate construction.
  • Expertise using CAD/CAM and AFP programming software such as CATIA (CPD/AFP), Siemens NX, Mastercam, or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency in developing and editing NC code and machine logic specific to AFP systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, ply books, and technical specifications, with a strong understanding of GD&T and composite design principles.
  • Familiarity with aerospace composite materials (carbon fiber, prepreg systems) and their manufacturing characteristics.
  • Knowledge of aerospace quality standards such as AS9100 and ISO9001 and their impact on composite manufacturing processes.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensures accurate ply placement, sequencing, and compliance with engineering intent.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills related to AFP programming, machine behavior, and material performance.
  • Technical Communication: Ability to clearly collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Time Management: Effectively manages multiple AFP programming tasks while meeting production deadlines.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Proactively refines AFP programs and processes for improved efficiency and quality.
  • Analytical Thinking: Evaluates AFP performance data to optimize machine utilization and program effectiveness.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in AFP NC programming, preferably with AFP or composite aerospace manufacturing required.
  • Hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD/CAM software, such as Mastercam, CATIA V5, or Siemens NX required.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Candidates "must/may need" to be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
  • Successful candidates must be able to secure Program Access approval

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create, test, and optimize NC programs for AFP machines, ensuring the accurate machining of aerospace components based on CAD models and engineering specifications.
  • Develop efficient and accurate fiber placement paths for milling, turning, and other machining operations, reducing cycle time while maintaining precision.
  • Assist with the setup and selection of material formats, heads, compaction parameters, and machine settings to ensure optimal AFP production.
  • Identify and resolve programming issues related to tow drops, gaps, overlaps, steering limits, and machine constraints, minimizing scrap and rework.
  • Work closely with design engineers, machinists, and quality teams to ensure the program meets engineering requirements and production goals.
  • Continuously improve AFP processes by reviewing and refining NC programs to increase efficiency, reduce defects, and improve part quality.
  • Maintain detailed records of NC programs, ply files, material definitions, and setup documentation to ensure repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure that all AFP NC programs comply with aerospace industry standards and company-specific quality requirements.
