About The Position

HX5 is currently seeking an Aeroacoustic Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center. The successful candidate will evaluate the noise, performance, and commercial value of concept air vehicles to inform NASA, its industry partners, and regulatory bodies on the viability and possibilities of a future high-speed aircraft market. A detailed understanding of community noise restrictions and regulations are of particular interest as the high-thrust low-drag requirements for supersonic cruise present unique challenges for airport noise. This role requires working with other engineers in propulsion and airframe systems to get the vehicle data needed for acoustic studies and to develop the optimization routines needed to conduct a full-vehicle evaluation. This will require a working knowledge of NASA’s legacy design tools and an ability to develop and incorporate new acoustic methods and models into the optimization workflow. A general knowledge and background in high-speed aircraft design to conduct trade-studies between noise, performance, and regulatory requirements is preferred.

Requirements

  • An extensive background and experience in high-speed aircraft design, particularly supersonic aircraft, and in regulatory noise requirements for commercial aircraft.
  • Strong experience using design software packages NPSS, WATE++, FLOPS, and ANOPP, as well as MATLAB and Python programming languages.
  • Extensive knowledge of acoustic metrics and test procedures used in aircraft certification.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering with a minimum of 6 years of experience working in the commercial aerospace industry.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in development of empirical models and development of software codes, including integration into software design environments.
  • Excellent technical writing, editing, and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support concept development of commercial supersonic aircraft as part of an aircraft design team, being responsible for evaluation of propulsion systems/vehicle noise.
  • Evaluate operational procedures to conform with noise regulations and commercial requirements.
  • Perform optimization of aircraft design and operational parameters to reduce environmental impacts and maximize commercial viability.
  • Encode new mathematical models for aircraft noise prediction into NASA’s design workflow.
  • Document, report, and disseminate results clearly and concisely.
