About The Position

Amentum, a global engineering services company headquartered in Tullahoma, Tennessee, will offer an Aero-Mechanical Engineering internship opportunity. The opportunity will commence in the summer term of 2026 and will be awarded to an outstanding student who is majoring in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering. The student selected as the Amentum Scholar will work at Amentum’s Tullahoma office. The student will work under the supervision of a technical manager and mentor in the Fluid Dynamics, Acoustics, and Propulsion Section performing engineering design of complex testing equipment and facilities for the automotive and aerospace industries. Intern students will work 20-hour work weeks for approximately 10 weeks during the months of June, July, and August (negotiable). Students will work on project teams under the direction of a manager and with the assistance of a mentor, are required to attend planned activities, and must make an end-of-assignment presentation to other co-ops and Amentum’ staff. It is the responsibility of the selected candidate to make their own housing arrangements for the duration of the internship period. Amentum can provide suggestions for housing options in the local area. Job Duties: The workload is diverse and challenging. There are several roles envisaged for the candidate. The candidate will support colleagues with engineering design work and other aerodynamic and aeroacoustic tasks. The candidate will help the technical staff in the design or modeling of mechanical/aero systems. The candidate is expected to quickly develop the ability to organize, write, prepare, and orally deliver technical presentations, and reports, to internal technical audiences. The candidate is expected to quickly develop the ability for planning tasks and projects and schedules. The candidate is expected to manage his/her tasks to budget and schedule. Prepare computations, specifications, and reports of limited scope and complexity May review subcontractor submittals and shop drawings and provide limited support during construction at project sites May coordinate and interface with clients and other disciplines – including design, presentations, design reviews, and training at the Amentum office, client office, or project site May assist with project planning, budgeting, and cost estimating

Requirements

  • Degree Program: BSME or MSME
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.5 or higher
  • Area of Study: Mechanical and/or Aerospace engineering
  • Coursework: Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials
  • Outside activities: Involvement in at least one extra-curricular activity
  • Other: Must have the right to work permanently in the United States (US Citizen)
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be team-oriented
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Willing to take initiative and work with minimum supervision
  • Must maneuver in and around facility equipment while obtaining field measurements and troubleshooting equipment (5% - 10%)
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. - 10%
  • May be in proximity to electrical or rotating equipment and other hazards. Appropriate PPE must be worn and may include hand and foot protection, eye protection, and hearing protection. 5%
  • Work will be performed in office or lab environment. (80%-90%)
  • Field or test facility work may include outdoors work. (5%)
  • Office equipment, computers, copiers, etc (80 - 90%)
  • For making modifications to the wind tunnel or test apparatus: hand tools, power tools, safety equipment including gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, protective footwear, restrictions on loose-fitting clothing. (25%)
  • Sensitive Laboratory and Aerodynamics Measurement Equipment and Data Acquisition Equipment. (50%)
  • Regular day shift attendance is mandatory to meet schedules.

  • Must have clear, concise and accurate communications skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk to employees or others.

  • Independent personal transportation to office or work site is required.
  • Travel to and from customer’s locations and the test fields may be required to support projects.
  • When operating any vehicle for work purposes, must wear seat belt and in addition, no cellular devices are to be used when vehicle is in motion.
  • Must complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, health performance evaluation
  • May be in proximity to electrical or rotating equipment and other hazards.
  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time (90%)
  • Must be able to work at a computer for long periods of time (90%)
  • Occasional site visits and travel may require lifting, climbing, crawling in an outdoor environment (10%)
  • Special clothing/equipment and other PPE may be required during site visits (10%)
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Work will mainly be performed in an inside office environment (90%)
  • Field work may be required including outside work (10%)
  • Travel may be required to perform field work at project sites or to attend customer meetings (10%)

Nice To Haves

  • Cumulative GPA: 3.5 or higher
  • Coursework: Fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, compressible flows, heat transfer, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), aerospace propulsion, structures, solid mechanics (statics and dynamics), and/or vibration
  • Experience: 3D CAD, (Inventor or Sold Works), CFD, Past internship experience is a plus
  • Outside activities: Involvement in multiple extra-curricular activities – preferably to include participation on an engineering competition team
  • Student should have an interest in specializing in mechanical engineering upon graduation
