The Aegis Software Engineer at MITRE will play a crucial role in supporting the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) Program Division by providing technical guidance and leadership in software engineering, particularly in DevSecOps. This position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy software applications, ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet the needs of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense program. The engineer will work closely with government developers and senior leadership to drive digital transformation and modern software acquisition, ultimately contributing to the development of high-velocity and high-integrity weapon systems capabilities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy software applications and systems.
  • Participate in the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance.
  • Utilize software engineering expertise to help oversee development of efficient and scalable software solutions.
  • Help ensure software quality through code reviews, testing, and debugging.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest software engineering best practices, and apply them to enhance product performance and functionality.
  • Lead a team of software engineers to contribute to high-impact solutions in the software engineering field.
  • Collaborate across the corporation, with academia, industry, FFRDCs/UARCs and government to develop and bring the best solutions to our sponsors.
  • Assist in guiding the sponsor's technical investments, technical initiatives, lab environments, and development of staff skills.
  • Work with the Project Leader to bring an independent and differentiated perspective from other MITRE experts to maximize sponsor value.
  • Ensure that MITRE is continuously and effectively leveraging staff, capabilities, and investments from across the corporation to maximize impact to the Aegis BMD Program.
  • Address the sponsors' most pressing needs, priorities and outcomes; anticipate future needs; and apply critical and innovative thinking to achieve significant, measurable impact.
  • Work well with others and be a team player on multi-disciplined system engineering teams.
  • Typically requires a BS in Computer Science (or equivalent) and 8 years of hands-on experience, with technical depth in Software Architecture and DevSecOps/DevOps, or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination in Software Engineering.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility to execute independently across a diverse set of thought leaders and stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with effective time management skills.
  • Ability to lead a technical team, directing tasks to ensure timely, effective sponsor impact.
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • Experience in Software Architecture, DevOps/DevSecOps, Aegis Weapon System.
  • Experience with modernizing and refactoring large legacy software systems, especially as micro-services running in containers.
  • Experience leading small technical teams to deliver positive impact to a sponsor.
  • Experience with hypervisors and virtualized deployment.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)/Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)/Platform as a Service (PaaS).
  • Familiarity with how software impacts and relates to supporting US Missile Defense/Aegis.
  • Familiarity with related missions in agencies like MDA, NAVSEA, NIWC, PEO IWS, PEO C4I.
  • Experience secure coding practices for large software systems leveraging containers/virtual machines, CI/CD pipeline.
  • Experience with continuous Authority to Operate (cATO).
  • Deep understanding of computer networks, software systems, and encryption algorithms.
