JOB OVERVIEW The Advisor/ Advisor II for Nuclear Coordination and Radioactive Waste Policy, reporting to the Chief Policy Officer, will provide an opportunity to both help to expand the growth of advanced technologies, supporting NYSERDA’s mission to create opportunities for new energy technologies to grow the State’s economy, as well as assist in the responsible development of new facilities as the continued operation of existing facilities by ensuring NYSERDA’s statutorily defined responsibilities are successfully implemented. NYSERDA’s statutorily defined responsibilities include service as New York State Nuclear and Radioactive Materials Coordinator, the State Low Level Radioactive Waste Program, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission State Liaison Officer. The Advisor will also play an active role in coordinating nuclear and radioactive waste policy among several state and local agencies and preparing technical and policy guidance for nuclear-related program activities at NYSERDA. These responsibilities include participation in the State Disaster Preparedness Commission processes for radiological emergency preparedness and response. The Advisor will also participate in the development of projects advancing new nuclear technologies, which will include participation with the NYSERDA team in the development of the State’s Master Plan for Responsible Nuclear Technology Development and collaboration with representatives of other states, including the First Mover Initiative, also seeking early technology development pathways.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a highly related field of study, and 7 years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in setting strategy and informing decision within business, non-profit or government operating environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a highly related field of study, and 8 years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in setting strategy and informing decision within business, non-profit or government operating environments.
  • Ability to view emerging issues taking account for the full suite of State and federal processes and conditions, to assess impacts to the State and interdependencies among several potential State actions.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and understand how to guide focus and decision on essential requirements as opposed to incidental issues.
  • Ability to analyze complex engineering, scientific and regulatory issues to assess
  • Interdependencies of both related and disparate issues
  • Impact potential to public health and the environment
  • Impact to State policies and regulatory entities
  • Necessary State partners to achieve informed and supported decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain & translate complex engineering, scientific, regulatory and policy issues into plain language for audiences of different responsibility levels and backgrounds.
