About The Lilly Medicine Foundry: Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact. Organization and Position Overview: The Augmented Intelligence Leader is an advisor-level technical expert responsible for researching, evaluating, and implementing cutting-edge digital technologies that position the Medicine Foundry as a leader in pharmaceutical digital innovation. This role develops novel applications of AI/ML, extended reality, cognitive computing, and emerging technologies to solve complex operational challenges. The leader pioneers innovative solutions that optimize manufacturing and quality processes while reducing costs, environmental impact, and time to patient. As a technical leader and innovator, this role collaborates as a peer expert with Tech@Lilly architects, partners with external research institutions and industry leaders, and applies specialized expertise to enable the Medicine Foundry's vision of automated, paperless, fully integrated operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Engineering, or related technical discipline with 12 years relevant experience OR Master's degree with 8 years experience OR Ph.D. with 5 years experience, demonstrating deep technical expertise and innovation in emerging technologies.
  • Progressive experience in emerging technology development, innovation management, or digital transformation with proven track record implementing novel AI/ML or advanced technology solutions in complex environments.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in AI/ML, computer vision, NLP, extended reality, digital twins, or cognitive computing with proven ability designing and implementing enterprise-scale solutions delivering measurable business value.
  • Research-level expertise in emerging technology methodologies with demonstrated history advancing beyond industry standard practices through innovation and technical leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical M&Q systems with experience applying advanced technologies to manufacturing, process development, or quality challenges while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, or related quantitative field strongly preferred; Master's degree with extensive technical research and demonstrated innovation track record considered.
  • Minimum 8 years in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or FDA-regulated industries with deep understanding of cGMP manufacturing, quality operations, and responsible AI principles.
  • Track record of technical innovation through publications, patents, conference presentations, open-source contributions, or recognized achievements advancing AI/ML applications in pharmaceutical or life sciences.
  • Hands-on experience implementing LLMs, generative AI, foundation models, AI agent frameworks, digital twins, XR applications, or simulation platforms in production pharmaceutical environments.
  • Experience with emerging AI technologies, innovation management methodologies (design thinking, lean startup), and change management approaches building enthusiasm for new technologies.
  • Experience in highly matrixed pharmaceutical organizations partnering with R&D technical leaders (R5+) and IT architects to deliver innovative yet pragmatic solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Research, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies including AI/ML, computer vision, NLP, extended reality, digital twins, and cognitive computing that advance pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities.
  • Identify high-value use cases and execute proof-of-concept projects that validate feasibility and business value, delivering measurable impact on quality, cost, cycle time, safety, and environmental outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Tech@Lilly principal architects as a peer expert to evaluate capabilities, assess vendor solutions, and make platform decisions balancing innovation with operational requirements.
  • Partner with Data Strategy & Data Orchestration Leader to build AI/ML infrastructure through data preparation, feature engineering, model governance, and responsible AI implementation.
  • Drive research collaborations with academic institutions, industry consortia, and technology partners while maintaining innovation pipeline and roadmap from exploration through scaled deployment.
  • Develop business cases and ROI analyses, translate technical concepts for executive leadership, and establish metrics tracking business impact and value delivery.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing innovation team, coaching in emerging technologies, problem-solving, and technical excellence.
  • Champion innovation culture encouraging creative problem-solving, calculated risk-taking, and continuous learning aligned with strategic priorities.
