Job Overview Salary Range : Up to $125K Position Location: Manheim Auction facility: 4691 Calle Joven, Oceanside, CA 92057 The Advanced Diagnostics Field Engineer is a recognized subject matter expert responsible for advanced diagnostics, repair, and root cause analysis of buyback vehicles processed through the repair center. This role manages large projects and complex processes with limited oversight, serves as the technical authority within the workshop, and coaches, reviews, and delegates work to lower-level professionals. This role influences workshop policies, practices, and procedures, ensuring all repairs meet Mercedes-Benz standards for quality, safety, and compliance—including high-voltage systems. The role works closely with the Technical Workshop Operations Manager to maintain efficient workflow, resolve complex technical issues, and drive continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in automotive technology or equivalent technical training required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in advanced automotive diagnostics and repair, with demonstrated expertise in Mercedes-Benz systems.
  • Must have 2-4 years (total) of experience in the following:
  • Automotive Retail -- Knowledge of retail processes and procedures, with emphasis in New and Pre-owned sales, accessories, service and parts.
  • Business General -- Knowledge of fundamental business practices and concepts that influence the success and profitability of the organization.
  • Government -- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, as it relates to the automotive industry.
  • Master Technician certification from Mercedes-Benz or equivalent OEM certification required.
  • Certified to perform work on High Voltage Mercedes-Benz vehicles (EFK/Elektrofachkraft), or actively working toward EFK certification as required by MBUSA policy.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive technical information systems, diagnostic procedures, and repair documentation.
  • Proficiency with advanced diagnostic hardware and software (e.g., XENTRY, Monaco, CANalyzer, PicoScope).
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and service bulletins, German language skills a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve complex technical issues independently.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting less experienced technicians.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed to meet operational demands.
  • Occasional weekends or holiday work may be required.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks related to vehicle repair.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on buyback vehicles, utilizing manufacturer-approved methods, wiring diagrams, and technical literature.
  • Provide technical assistance to other technicians in the workshop, Field Service Engineers, R D on vehicles that are difficult to repair or are part of issue investigation.
  • Authorize repair or diagnostic procedures which include time allowance and modifications.
  • Lead root cause analysis of complex technical issues, especially those unresolved by the dealer network.
  • Manage and execute large-scale technical projects or process improvements within the workshop.
  • Coach, mentor, and delegate work to technicians, providing technical guidance and reviewing completed work for accuracy and compliance.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic tools (e.g., Monaco, Inca, Ecoute, CANalyzer, PicoScope) for in-depth troubleshooting.
  • Document technical findings, repair steps, and any gaps in documentation, tools, or processes; communicate these to relevant stakeholders with goal to improve Customer Satisfaction.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant work area; ensure proper inventory and condition of workshop tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Support special test programs, product evaluations, and other technical events as required.
  • Stay current with Mercedes-Benz technical training and certifications; maintain a lead in technical competency within the workshop.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance repair quality, reduce rework, and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure all high-voltage work is performed in accordance with MBUSA safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections in support of breach of warranty, lemon law, or other special circumstances
  • Support Engineering, Legal, and other internal business partners in making sound business decisions and facilitate favorable outcomes in litigation.
