The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill the role of Academic Advising Dean, a senior-level academic advisor position focused on undergraduate advising. These deans provide specialized services for undergraduate students, handling complex matters such as academic warning or suspension, coordinating university resources, processing appeals to academic decisions, and assisting students in crisis. They oversee the academic audit each semester to identify students at academic risk and help them develop graduation plans. Advising Deans also teach within the College’s General Education curriculum, specifically the Engagements courses for first-year students. They are expected to model student-centered approaches, and while most work with a general student population, some may be assigned to specialized portfolios like athletes, veterans, transfers, or Echols scholars. Academic Advising Deans participate in professional development, mentor early-career advisors, and serve as a resource to faculty and departments. They must demonstrate a commitment to the Liberal Arts and Sciences, understand the College curriculum, navigate academic policies, and exhibit an empathetic, student-centered approach to support students' intellectual and emotional development.
