About The Position

The Adventure Trips Director at YMCA of Western North Carolina is responsible for facilitating off-site adventure-based programs, including activities such as White Water Rafting and Horseback Riding. This role involves coordinating and ensuring the safe execution of camping trips while upholding the policies of YMCA Camp Watia and the American Camp Association. The director must effectively manage risks, respond to emergencies, and promote environmental stewardship throughout the adventure trips.

Requirements

  • Some experience in adventure programming or related field is required.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage logistics for trips.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate outdoor adventure activities safely.
  • Knowledge of risk management and emergency response procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with vendors and participants.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in first aid and CPR.
  • Experience in outdoor education or youth programming.
  • Familiarity with environmental stewardship practices.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison between YMCA Camp Watia and the vendors while leading day trips.
  • Transport campers daily to and from adventure vendor facilities offsite.
  • Prepare, inspect, and organize necessary equipment for trips including helmets, gloves, sunglasses, and other adventure supplies.
  • Coordinate with specific cabins to ensure campers are prepared for trips with necessary clothing and gear.
  • Responsible for the health and wellness of all adventure trip participants, including physical, mental, emotional, social, and nutritional wellness.
  • Review and understand the Emergency Action Plan with the Senior Program Director to establish travel directions, camping locations, daily schedules, and emergency contacts.
  • Conduct a pre-trip orientation with all participants to establish roles, norms, expectations, and necessary technical skills.
  • Transport participants to and from camping locations and adventure activities.
  • Plan and budget meals for the week, including recipes, shopping lists, and food storage.
  • Facilitate programs for both educational value and fun during the trip.
  • Maintain availability at all times of the day and night while away from YMCA Camp Watia.
  • Complete post-trip paperwork and trip evaluations.
