About The Position

Join our education team as an Adventure Instructor based out of Sharon Woods. Great Parks is seeking a qualified professional to create and lead outdoor programming for people of all ages. This position will support programming efforts throughout the East region including programming at Sharon Woods, Lake Isabella, Woodland Mound, Otto Armleder and Nature Center at The Summit. A successful Adventure Instructor provides strong communication skills, quick thinking on their feet and engages children and adults alike through safe and exciting adventurer programming. This seasonal position between May and Aug will average 25 hours per week and will require weekend, early morning and evening shifts. The ideal candidate will have experience and comfort in leading adventure programming. Programming will include but is not limited to kayaking, canoeing, archery and hiking. Requirements

  • An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:
  • Associate’s Degree in Parks and Recreation required and at least 1 year of training or experience with demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of recreational activities, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License that meets Great Parks current carrier guidelines

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and leads youth and adult groups through various types of challenging outdoor recreational activities including but not limited to team building and low ropes course, kayaking, canoeing, archery, hiking and bicycling.
  • Participates in discussion based on the activities and assists chaperones with group control.
  • Presents group activities in an accurate and educational manner for schools, community groups, corporate groups, organizations, the general public and for special events.
  • Maintains recreational and program supplies and equipment under guidance of Regional Education Manager
  • Monitors the safety of program areas, recognizes hazards and takes quick action to adapt to conditions that may impact safety of guests, participants or the public. Assists in maintaining required records and reports to measure programming effectiveness and safety.
  • Provides accurate information to general public and answers inquiries, maintains good public relations. Develops adventure and recreation themes and content shared though various sources such as print and kiosks
  • Works with and contributes to Great Parks’ volunteer engagement efforts and programs.
  • Assists with all aspects of programming and facility operations, as delegated, to meet departmental objectives.
  • Engages in training and learning to enhance knowledge of adventure program facilitation and safety standards.
  • Performs job duties in accordance with Great Parks’ policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as required.
