About The Position

As a Senior Technical Writing Specialist at General Dynamics Mission Systems, you will be responsible for creating, planning, writing, and editing complex operational, instructional, and interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), as well as maintenance or test procedures. Your role will involve documenting engineering processes and specifications by editing notes and procedures from software developers and engineering staff, ensuring that all deliverables meet established editorial and document governance standards. You will collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs), developers, and engineers to gather technical details, interpret engineering data, and create user-friendly documentation. This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, AR/VR, Cloud Native, and Quantum Physics, contributing to solutions that help keep our nation safe.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to research unfamiliar technology and summarize it for end-users.
  • Proficient in writing and editing technical documentation in various formats (e.g., .doc, .PDF, HTML, XML/SGML-tagged IETMs).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using an XML editor (e.g., XMLSpy, Arbortext).
  • Understanding of S1000D Applicability.
  • Basic understanding of JIRA and Confluence.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design principles.
  • Understanding of a repository-based content management system (e.g., TortoiseSVN).

Responsibilities

  • Develop operational procedural and maintenance manuals in accordance with MIL-STD-3001, MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-24784, and MIL-STD 40051-2C.
  • Collaborate with SMEs, developers, and engineers to gather technical details and ensure documentation meets operational and end-user requirements.
  • Interpret engineering data, technical drawings, Bill Of Materials (BOMs), and system specifications to develop user-friendly documentation.
  • Support documentation efforts through the full lifecycle of a Navy system or program.
  • Maintain established technical documentation lifecycle, including review cycles and hardware/software update cycles.
  • Create supporting graphics in various formats to support electronic technical manuals.
  • Collaborate with the development team to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality results.
