The Advanced R D Engineer Scientist position at UOP LLC in Des Plaines, IL involves developing process design and technoeconomic evaluations critical to the development and support of new process technologies from their inception in R D through the commercialization stage. The role requires collaboration with other members of the Development organization, UOP's Engineering Department, Research Group, and Business Team. The engineer will develop simulations, material balances, preliminary equipment designs, and utilities estimates for new process technology concepts based on preliminary yield and performance estimates. Additionally, the position involves using commercial process simulation software to establish the basis for the evaluation and optimization of design concepts, performing techno-economic analyses (TEAs) of process concepts, and generating Basic Engineering Packages (BEPs) for new process technologies as the primary means of transferring new process technologies from R D to Engineering.

  • Develop process design and technoeconomic evaluations for new process technologies.
  • Collaborate with Development organization, Engineering Department, Research Group, and Business Team.
  • Develop simulations, material balances, preliminary equipment designs, and utilities estimates.
  • Use commercial process simulation software for evaluation and optimization of design concepts.
  • Perform techno-economic analyses (TEAs) of process concepts.
  • Generate Basic Engineering Packages (BEPs) for new process technologies.
  • PhD or foreign equivalent in Chemical Engineering or a related field and 2 years of experience in modeling, process simulation, process development, or reaction engineering of refining, petrochemicals and/or gas processing applications.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in the above-listed fields and 5 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree and 7 years of experience.
  • Experience and capability in statistics, experimental design, data analytics, and advanced parameter estimation and numerical methods.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, data science tools and algorithms.
  • Computer programming skills.
  • Knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals including fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction engineering.
  • Exposure to UOP technologies: Renewable Fuels/Refining/Petrochemicals/Gas Processing applications.
  • Knowledge of Six-Sigma principles and their use in managing risk and uncertainty.
