About The Position

University Health Partners of Hawaii is the Faculty Practice of the John A Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). In conjunction with the State of Hawaii's Department of Health - Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, JABSOM and UHP are expanding Hawaii UTelehealth (HUT) to provide access to no-cost addiction medicine treatment for the State of Hawaii. Our new Telehealth Addiction Medicine program is founded on the belief that everyone deserves a path to recovery. We aim to provide evidence-based, patient-centered, and non-judgmental care for individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), meeting them wherever they are in their journey. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specializing in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) within addiction medicine focuses on providing comprehensive care to individuals struggling with substance use and addiction. The APRN assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients, develops individualized treatment plans, prescribes medications, and offers counseling and therapy.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on substance abuse or psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Current, unencumbered APRN-Rx license in the state of Hawaii.
  • Clinical experience in addiction medicine or psychiatric-mental health nursing.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Board Certification as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse — Advanced Practice (CARN-AP), or other nationally recognized board certification center; OR have obtained active Board Certification by the start date if selected.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough evaluations to identify substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans that may include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), counseling, and behavioral therapies.
  • Prescribe and manage medications used in addiction treatment, such as buprenorphine, and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Educate patients and their families about addiction, treatment options, and recovery strategies.
  • Work closely with physicians, clinical pharmacists, counselors, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic care.
  • Regularly assess patient progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and provide ongoing support.
  • Comply with all legal requirements and company policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
