About The Position

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The incumbent examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Furthermore, the incumbent ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse prescribes medications and orders diagnostic tests and advises patients about continuing care. The Outpatient Orthopedic Joint Replacement Nurse Practitioner (APRN) functions as an advanced practice provider within a multidisciplinary academic orthopedic team specializing in adult joint reconstruction. This role provides comprehensive outpatient care to patients undergoing total hip and knee replacement procedures. The NP collaborates closely with orthopedic surgeons, fellows, residents, nurses, physical therapists, and ancillary staff to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care across the continuum of care, including conservative management, preoperative optimization, postoperative follow-up, and long-term outcomes management. The position supports the academic mission through participation in education, quality improvement, and clinical research initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in relevant field
  • Valid State of Florida APRN License
  • No previous experience required
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) from an accredited program
  • Current Nurse Practitioner licensure in Florida
  • National NP certification (e.g., ANCC or AANP)
  • Eligibility for credentialing and privileging at an academic medical center
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Acute Care Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Orthopedic NP certification preferred but not required
  • Prior experience in orthopedic surgery, adult reconstruction, or musculoskeletal care
  • Experience in outpatient surgical or procedural settings
  • Familiarity with academic medical center workflows and teaching environments
  • Demonstrated interest in clinical research, quality improvement, or education

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g., admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Conduct comprehensive outpatient evaluations for patients with degenerative joint disease and other conditions requiring joint replacement
  • Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary patient management team.
  • Act as a liaison representing Ortho between the inpatient staff, outside providers, insurance companies, social workers, rehab services, home health agencies/DME companies, and patients to provide complete patient care.
  • Assist with prepping faculty clinics prior to their scheduled dates.
  • Assist with facilitating the faculty clinics to ensure efficiency and effective patient care.
  • Assist with new and follow-up patient histories and physical exams.
  • Facilitate the correct ordering of studies and procedures while in faculty clinics.
  • Function as the first clinical point of contact for your patients to provide clinical support through the entire continuum of care.
  • Manage patients' clinical requests to include medication refills, ordering of DME/services, and completion of necessary paperwork/letters.
  • Provide patient education and participate in patient/family interventions.
  • Follow post-operative patients and monitor for any postoperative complications and patients have the resources necessary for recovery.
  • Ensures the appropriate applications of critical pathways.
  • Consult with patients and prospective patients/families by phone.
  • Evaluate/triage need for care and advise regarding appropriate interventions including need for emergency treatment.
  • Consult with other professionals regarding decision-making for patient care as needed.
  • Participate in decision-making with patients by providing information regarding pathophysiology and benefits/risks of treatment options.
  • Assist with clinical and administrative staff development.
  • Perform outpatient procedures such as joint aspirations and injections
  • Assist with minor procedures and clinical interventions in the ambulatory setting
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and other advanced practice providers
  • Contribute to clinical guidelines, care pathways, and evidence-based practice initiatives
  • Engage in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes research projects
  • Support data collection and registry participation related to joint replacement outcomes
  • Document care accurately and efficiently within the electronic health record
  • Participate in departmental meetings, case conferences, and multidisciplinary care planning
  • Maintain compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
