About The Position

The Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition at The University of Chicago is consistently ranked among the best specialty nationally by U.S News and World Report. With nearly 40 specialists on staff, our program plays a leading role in the understanding of digestive diseases and in developing innovative and successful treatments for patients. Since forming the nation’s first full-time department of gastroenterology in 1927, our physicians have continually improved treatments for digestive tract and related disorders by combining medical research, education, and patient care at the highest level. The Advanced Practice Provider reports to the Director of Adult Clinical Nutrition in the Section of Gastroenterology and/or assigned Supervising Physician(s), Section Administration and attending physicians assigned (monthly) to the service.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.
  • Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).

Nice To Haves

  • Once licensed and as needed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Privileged and credentialed through UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
  • Conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
  • Interview and obtain medical information.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills.
  • Enter into written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive care to both outpatients and inpatients within Gastroenterology practices, working within the Practice Guideline.
  • Works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills to manage a caseload of patients as an independent healthcare provider.
  • Conducts assessment, diagnosis, initiation of delegated medical treatments, independent nursing interventions and evaluation of care, in addition to certain diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
  • Provides a model of care that is shaped by theory, expanded by science, research and reflective practice, and is identified by a holistic and comprehensive approach to the patients.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.
  • Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
