About The Position

The Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) works collaboratively with a supervising physician to provide comprehensive care for oncology patients. This role involves direct and indirect patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluation. The APP provides clinical expertise, supports care coordination, and ensures high-quality outcomes by collaborating with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary healthcare team, in accordance with practice protocols and state regulations.

Requirements

  • Must hold advanced practice licensure/certification as required by the state of Tennessee.
  • Nurse Practitioners must also hold an RN license in Tennessee.
  • Certificate to prescribe and current DEA license required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required; ACLS preferred.
  • Strong clinical knowledge with ability to assess, diagnose, and treat oncology patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and follow-up abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including EMR, word processing, and email.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and independently when required.
  • Professional demeanor with flexibility, reliability, and commitment to patient care.
  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in oncology or related specialty preferred.
  • ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and examine patients; collect medical history and perform physical exams.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic labs and radiology studies.
  • Plan, order, and prescribe treatments and medications within scope of practice.
  • Perform procedures within specialty competency (e.g., bone marrow aspirates, Ommaya taps).
  • Provide patient education and counseling, ensuring documentation in the EMR.
  • Assist with chemotherapy/immunotherapy consents and hospital admissions.
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians on new patient issues and care plans.
  • Review pathology and records, obtaining documentation as needed.
  • Identify patients eligible for clinical trials in conjunction with MD and research staff.
  • Manage patient needs between visits (triage calls, refills, symptom management).
  • Provide continuity of care when physician is unavailable.
  • Supervise infusion care by monitoring labs, clearing patients for treatment, and responding to emergent situations.
  • Mentor and serve as a resource for nurses in the infusion setting.
  • Participate in tumor boards, staff meetings, and multidisciplinary conferences.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and correspondence for referring providers.
  • Ensure compliance with patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory requirements.
