About The Position

Shriners Children’s is looking for a part-time Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our team at Shriners Children’s Northern California. This provider will support inpatient burn care, outpatient plastics and burn clinic, and operative services. This position offers exposure to complex burn management, reconstructive procedures, and participation in a growing laser reconstruction program (training provided). The APP will rotate between clinic, inpatient burn coverage, and the OR, working alongside surgeons and two APPs who share coverage across care settings. Responsibilities include burn takedowns and dressing changes under sedation, laser treatments, and cross-coverage support in related clinics as needed. This position entails a 0.5 FTE commitment, with a schedule consisting of full workdays only, alternating between three days one week and two days the next, with anticipated workdays on Monday and Friday plus either Wednesday or Thursday. Standard hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with flexibility as the program evolves. The position is open to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners (preferably PNP). OR participation is expected; RNFA certification is required for NPs (not required for PAs). Candidates without RNFA will be considered and supported in obtaining certification. The pay range for this position is $81,500-$115,000 annually. Compensation is determined based on years of advanced practice experience and departmental equity.

Requirements

  • If Physician Assistant Master of Physician Assistant Studies (or equivalent degree) from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • If Nurse Practitioner Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • 2+ years of advanced practice clinical experience in a pediatric or pediatric specialty setting preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the state of practice
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or equivalent board certification in applicable specialty area, such as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC, CPNP-PC) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). CPNP certification highly preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice
  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) certification is required for Nurse Practitioners participating in operative cases. Candidates without RNFA certification will be considered and supported in obtaining certification.
  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification may be required based on clinical assignment
  • Strong pediatric assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Familiarity with pediatric specialty protocols and post-surgical care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with patients, families, and care teams.
  • Proficient in EHR systems and clinical documentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, family-centered care, and trauma-informed practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Recent graduates will be considered based on previous experience, training and clinical exposure.
  • Experience with pediatric burn, surgical critical care, or plastic surgical patient populations preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive and age-appropriate health assessments, histories, and physical exams.
  • Formulate differential diagnoses and develop care plans in coordination with supervising physicians and the care team.
  • Manage care for pediatric orthopedic specialty populations
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative evaluations and ongoing management in both inpatient and ambulatory surgical environments.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic imaging, lab work, and other tests as permitted by licensure and protocol.
  • Perform routine procedures and assist in specialty surgical cases within the scope of licensure.
  • Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions consistent with the scope of practice and Shriners Children’s policies.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics and care conferences to support coordinated, integrated care.
  • Educate patients, caregivers, and staff on disease processes, treatment plans, and home care strategies.
  • Document clinical findings, treatment plans, and patient responses using the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Support quality improvement, patient safety, and research initiatives as appropriate to the role.
  • Provide mentorship or precepting to clinical staff or trainees as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations, including infection control and documentation standards.
  • Perform additional duties within the scope of licensure as assigned to support patient care and organizational goals.
  • Maintain all professional licensure, certifications, and mandatory training in compliance with state and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
  • Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.
