MUSC Health is seeking a dedicated and experienced Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) to provide PRN medical services within the Horry County Detention Center. This role supports the delivery of comprehensive primary and correctional health care to an incarcerated population in a structured, secure clinical environment. About Correctional Health Services – Horry County Detention Center The APP will provide on-site primary and correctional healthcare services to detainees housed at the Horry County Detention Center. Care is delivered in an outpatient, facility-based setting focused on medical evaluation, treatment of acute and chronic conditions, intake assessments, and coordination of care within a multidisciplinary correctional healthcare team. Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program with current or eligible South Carolina PA licensure OR Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with current or eligible South Carolina APRN licensure, as noted below:
  • APRN License Type/Certification (select appropriate based on patient population): AGPNP / ANP – Adult patients (13 years to death), stable chronic disease management, primary care FNP – Primary care across the lifespan (birth to death)
  • South Carolina DHEC and DEA licenses
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Strong clinical judgment and assessment skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Proficiency in EHR systems
  • Ability to work independently within defined protocols
  • Comfort practicing in a secure, correctional healthcare environment
  • Commitment to patient-centered care, ethics, and continuous quality improvement

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical experience in primary care, urgent care, occupational health, or correctional health preferred
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards, safety protocols, and secure clinical environments
  • Prior correctional or institutional healthcare experience preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive health histories and physical examinations
  • Evaluating, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic medical conditions
  • Reviewing laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic test results in accordance with scope of practice
  • Performing approved clinical procedures, consistent with training and credentialing, including: Cryotherapy Incision and drainage of wounds Simple skin biopsies Intramuscular, subcutaneous, and other injectable therapies
  • Managing intake medical evaluations and ongoing detainee health assessments
  • Initiating referrals to specialty care and consulting with the attending or collaborating physician as appropriate
  • Documenting and billing for clinical services rendered
  • Utilizing evidence-based clinical guidelines and current research in decision-making
  • Provide timely medical assessment and treatment of detainees within a secure environment
  • Manage chronic disease conditions and acute medical issues common to incarcerated populations
  • Support continuity of care during intake, incarceration, and transition of care upon release
  • Ensure compliance with correctional healthcare standards and institutional protocols
  • Collaborate with custody staff while maintaining clinical independence and professional boundaries
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, mental health professionals, and detention center leadership
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and case reviews
  • Support quality improvement, patient safety, and accreditation initiatives
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities
  • May contribute to the training and mentorship of students or new staff as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant medical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Adhere to all regulatory, accreditation, and institutional policies
  • Assist with clinical policy development and quality initiatives as assigned
