About The Position

The position at UVA Health in the Nerancy Neurocritical Care Unit (NNICU) and Neurologic Intermediate Care Unit (NIMU) offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with interest in critical care and neurology. Preferred experience includes 1-2 years of hospital-based medicine, including critical care medicine, but open and eager to train new graduates with a thorough orientation. The APP will provide professional services to evaluate and treat critically ill patients with an underlying neurologic diagnosis. This includes performing bedside procedures such as, but not limited to, central line placement, arterial line placement, midline placement, lumbar puncture, and bronchoscopy. Candidates do not need prior procedure experience or ability to demonstrate competencies with procedures to apply. This full-time role (40 hours/week) involves rotating 12 hour shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The APP will be expected to provide patient care in both the NNICU and NIMU. This is a fast-paced environment with a rapidly growing scope of management for which a motivated APP will have robust opportunities in research and Quality Improvement. The position offers the opportunity to bill for evaluation and management services when providing care in the NIMU.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
  • Experience: Department and unit specific.
  • Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of experience as an LIP, 1 year of ICU experience as an LIP
  • Education: PA-C, AGAC-NP
  • Experience: Open to new graduates, preferred 2 years of inpatient experience, 1 year of ICU experience
  • Licensure/Certifications: ACLS/BLS, ENLS (Emergency Neurologic Life Support)

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Neurology and Neurosurgery teams in multi-disciplinary approach for patient management.
  • Valued member of an interprofessional team that includes Attendings, Residents, Fellows, etc
  • Performs and documents comprehensive histories and physical exams.
  • Formulates diagnoses, identifies problems and health risk profiles, and clearly communicates and collaborates with other team members. Evaluates and analyzes patient responses to disease process and/or therapeutic, diagnostic interventions.
  • Provides information, education, and support to patients/families regarding disease processes and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures within scope of practice and UVA Health credentialing and privileges
  • Participates in the clinical experience of students, interns, and residents as appropriate.
  • Meets quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health.
  • Promotes the professional practice of the advanced practice group by serving as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and allied health care practitioners.
  • Updates practice through continuing education by attending conferences, rounds, reports, lectures, journal clubs, and regional/national professional conferences.
  • Ensures accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information in accordance with institutional, state, and federal regulations
  • Facilitates timely patient flow through effective coordination with interdisciplinary team members
  • Supports clinical operations through adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and clinical pathways
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and workflow optimization as assigned
  • Practices in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and scope of practice for Advanced Practice Providers
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members
  • Advocates for patients and families regarding educational needs, treatment options, ethical considerations, and patient rights
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs of Neurocritical care patients and families
  • Engages in ongoing professional development, continuing education, and maintenance of certification and licensure
  • Provides comprehensive clinical care to neurocritically-ill patients independently and in collaboration with ICU, Neurosurgery, and Neurology physicians and interdisciplinary team members
  • Performs complete and focused histories and physical examinations
  • Documents clinical findings, including pertinent normal and abnormal findings, in the medical record
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic laboratory tests and imaging studies
  • Formulates medical diagnoses based on clinical assessment and diagnostic findings
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized treatment plans
  • Prescribes and recommends pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies within scope of practice
  • Initiates specialty consultations and referrals as clinically indicated
  • Recognizes and responds to acute and emergent clinical situations, initiating life-saving interventions and activating appropriate interdisciplinary support
  • Explains the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated outcomes of procedures to patients, families, staff, and learners
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to initiate, evaluate, and refine clinical pathways and protocols
  • Supports and strengthens interdisciplinary relationships to promote coordinated, patient-centered care
  • Serves as a clinical resource and role model for staff, students, and trainees
  • Contributes to the advancement of Neurocritical Care through participation in program development, quality initiatives, and best-practice implementation
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence in Neurocritical care patient care
