About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider in neurointerventional radiology is responsible for the coordination of care for people with vascular disorders of the brain, head and neck, or spine. They see patients independently and occasionally alongside the neuroradiologist. The Advanced Practice Provider will provide a thorough exam, provide pre- and post-op teaching, write prescriptions, triage, consent the patients, round and discharge at the hospital, and help prevent or treat any issues. On the inpatient nursing unit, this position will coordinate the patients care and assist the neuroradiologist in directing the pre- and post-operative nursing care for these patients. The major functions in this environment consist of patient assessment, writing medication and treatment orders and performing, or directing specific tasks. Daily and rotating inpatient rounding is expected in this position. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Current DEA certification (verified during credentialing process)
  • Physician Assistant:
  • Licensed as a PA with the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice
  • NCCPA certification
  • Approved by Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for prescription writing privileges (verified during credentialing process)
  • Nurse Practitioner:
  • Currently licensed as an APRN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing
  • Currently licensed as a RN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing
  • AANP certification
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with peers, students and other health care personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and prioritize appropriately.
  • Ability to document patient notes and orders using EPIC.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and appropriate software.
  • Ability to access and analyze pertinent information to make care decisions.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to travel to Methodist Hospital, Regions Hospital, and the Health Partners Neuroscience Center.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting the neuroradiologist in the care of neurointerventional surgery patients pre and post operatively on the nursing units
  • Coordinates the management of care with the neuroradiologist, related services, and nursing staff for neurointerventional surgery patients.
  • Maintains knowledge of current pre & post-operative care.
  • Writes orders for medications and treatments as necessary to facilitate pre- and post-operative care.
  • Completes discharge order set and dictates discharge summaries in a timely manner to facilitate discharge.
  • Daily and rotating inpatient rounding is expected in this position.
  • Obtains, consults, and collects pertinent patient information.
  • Coordinates the admitting process, H&P and other key coordination duties.
  • Maintains and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Documents in the EMR.
  • Discusses and develops diagnosis and pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment plans with staff physician, on both inpatient and outpatient patients.
  • Educates patient and family on the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process including prescribed medications.
  • Aids in the transition of patients to ensure continuity of the patient to the outpatient clinic setting independently and with clinic staff, APCs, and neuroradiologists.
  • Obtains history and examines patients.
  • Orders appropriate labs, radiology exams and medications.
  • Aware of optimal length of stay processes to ensure appropriate care and utilization of resources.
  • Provides education to and is a resource for the inpatient and neurointerventional procedures staff
  • Explains procedures to nursing staff to assist in care planning.
  • Provides patients/families with explanations of treatments to assist in decision making / informed consent process.
  • Obtains informed consent as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with other members of the health care team across the organization
  • Routinely discusses and collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team regarding the patient’s plan of care.
  • Responds to requests for consultation in a timely and effective manner to provide for patient care needs.
  • Demonstrates understanding of collaborative relationships by appropriately identifying and directing patient care within the scope of practice for an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Deals with conflict, or confrontation in a professional manner.
  • Participates on committees as assigned.
  • Discusses with and instructs patient/family members regarding treatment and follow-up and communicates information to care team in a timely and effective manner
  • Functions as liaison between patient/family and other health care team members and the physician
  • Verbal and written communication is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Initiates and/or participates in team conferences, family meetings, etc.
  • Deals with conflict and confrontation in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Assists with quality improvement initiatives/research studies as requested
  • Interview patients and collect information including authorization forms.
  • Discusses cases with neuroradiologists.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation and databases as needed.
