About The Position

This position has been allocated for an Advanced Practice Provider, licensed and board certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Advanced Practice Provider-Nocturnist Hospitalist (0.8 FTE) Position Title: Nocturnist Hospitalist Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Location: Valley Center Tower, Intermountain Medical Center (In person) Department: Hospital Level Care at Home Position Type: Decreased FTE Nocturnist Work Schedule: Hours: 12 Hour night shifts. No On-Call. Shifts: Rotating at both IMED and Telehealth in person night shifts including weekends and holidays. Job Description Summary We are a rapidly expanding team of Hospitalist physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) dedicated to clinical excellence, quality improvement, and delivering high value care to hospitalized patients. Our mission is to ensure patients receive the highest quality care in a collaborative, patient centered, and cost-effective manner. The Hospitalist Program is seeking a skilled and motivated Nocturnist Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our team in a hybrid role supporting both Intermountain Medical Center and our telehealth hub in Murray, Utah. This position provides overnight clinical coverage and combines in person hospital-based care with virtual care delivery. The Nocturnist APP will work collaboratively with hospitalist physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members to manage hospitalized patients during overnight hours. The ideal candidate is clinically confident, comfortable working independently, and able to manage a wide range of acute inpatient clinical scenarios. In addition to onsite responsibilities at Intermountain Medical Center, the APP will provide telehealth hospitalist services at our telehealth hub, including cross-cover support for rural hospitals, responding to care-related questions, and evaluating hospitalized patients experiencing clinical changes. The role also includes participation in Hospital at Home services, assisting with cross-cover and admissions through virtual patient assessments for patients in their home. Requirements

  • Current, unrestricted Advanced Practice Provider licensure in the state of Utah (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) or ability to obtain prior to start date
  • National board certification as an NP (ACNP, AGACNP, FNP with inpatient experience) or PA‑C
  • Minimum of 2 years of inpatient hospitalist or acute care experience preferred; strong consideration given to candidates with nocturnist experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently assess, diagnose, and manage acutely ill hospitalized patients within established scope of practice
  • Experience with overnight cross-coverage, admissions, and management of clinical decompensation in the inpatient setting
  • Comfort providing care in a telehealth environment, including virtual patient assessments and remote clinical decision making
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR); experience with enterprise inpatient EMRs strongly preferred
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining close communication with supervising and collaborating physicians
  • Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice
  • BLS and ACLS certification required (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout patient care areas for extended periods during overnight shifts
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while providing telehealth services and completing electronic documentation
  • Ability to perform physical assessments of hospitalized patients, including but not limited to auscultation, palpation, and visual inspection
  • Ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, or assist with moving patients or equipment, typically up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and position self as necessary to perform patient examinations and clinical procedures within scope of practice
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment, computers, and telehealth technology
  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to assess patient conditions, review electronic medical records, and communicate effectively with patients and care teams
  • Ability to work overnight shifts and respond promptly to urgent clinical situations in both in‑person and virtual care settings

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive overnight clinical care for hospitalized patients at Intermountain Medical Center, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical conditions
  • Collaborate closely with hospitalist physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary care teams to ensure safe, effective, and timely patient care during nocturnal hours
  • Independently evaluate and manage patients experiencing clinical changes, escalating care appropriately based on acuity and clinical judgment
  • Perform admissions, cross‑coverage, and ongoing inpatient management in accordance with established protocols and scope of practice
  • Deliver telehealth hospitalist services, including virtual cross‑coverage support for onsite night teams and real‑time consultation for care‑related questions
  • Conduct virtual patient assessments for hospitalized patients and Hospital at Home participants experiencing changes in condition
  • Assist with admissions and cross‑coverage for the Hospital at Home program through remote evaluations and coordination with in‑home care teams
  • Accurately document clinical encounters, assessments, and care plans in the electronic medical record in a timely and compliant manner
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support clinical workflows that enhance patient safety, efficiency, and care standardization
  • Maintain effective communication with daytime teams to ensure continuity of care and safe patient handoffs
  • Adhere to institutional policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements across both in‑person and virtual care environments
