About The Position

The Department of Neurosurgery and Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU-SOM) is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Advanced Practice Provider (APP), of the rank Instructor or Senior Instructor of Clinical Practice, in the Neuro-Oncology section. The APP will be a clinical faculty member of CU-SOM with full benefits. The position will not be involved in course instruction. This position will provide both acute and chronic direct outpatient care for neurologic patients, primarily patients with malignant and benign brain tumors. The APP will provide outpatient care via a mix of independent clinics alongside a physician provider. The APP will also participate in multi-disciplinary treatment planning and coordination of care with radiation oncology, neurology, neurosurgery and other specialties as needed. Successful candidates will have a proven record of accomplishment in supporting the needs of patients, developing differential diagnoses, and prescribing treatments in collaboration with leading specialty providers. Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing and/or a graduate of an Accredited Physician Assistant School
  • Current active license to practice in the state of Colorado as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant.
  • Prescriptive authority is required.
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner/or as a Physician Assistant by a national professional organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally
  • Proven ability to care for high acuity, high complexity patients
  • Follow and share best practices in research (ICH guidelines, GCP, FDA guidelines).
  • Ability to work individually and as a team to support team-based medical care in an APP/Physician/Resident Physician model
  • Dedication and commitment to professional development and life-long learning.
  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible, and think quickly on your feet.
  • Experience with web-based tracking systems and Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access).

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of experience in inpatient or outpatient care
  • Experience in oncology or neuroscience subspecialty and/or experience in management of chronic diseases in a subspecialty environment.
  • Experience completing documentation and performing tasks routinely assigned in hospital settings using hospital record systems.

Responsibilities

  • Acute and chronic outpatient care of Neuro-Oncology patients, including administration of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, disease-modifying therapy, and health maintenance care.
  • Formulates the appropriate differential diagnoses based on clinical evaluation.
  • Plans and implements therapeutic regimens that include both nursing and medical management strategies, including prescription of patient medications/devices.
  • Monitor patients for adverse events related to therapeutics, e.g. toxicity assessments.
  • Incumbent is expected to become proficient in lumbar punctures and Ommaya punctures with instillation of chemotherapy.
  • Participation in clinical trials with expectation with completing and maintaining research trainings.
  • Assess patient’s medical status via chart review, imaging review, history taking and physical exam.
  • Performs, orders and/or interprets diagnostic studies within scope of practice and clinical area of practice using evidence-based medicine.
  • Facilitate referrals to other care providers.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacological agents.
  • Provide patient education and advocacy, including assuring patient and family teaching is adequate to manage the illness or wellness plan at home.
  • Consult with supervising physician when appropriate.
  • Inpatient consultations for acute or chronic Neuro-Oncology patients in the neurodiagnostic monitoring unit, daily progress notes with attendant documentation for these consults.
  • Daily rounding assessment and management of appropriate inpatients.
  • Establishes systematic follow-up for evaluation of the plan of care and reassesses and modifies the plan, as necessary, including initiation of referrals and consultation with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Participation in Brain Tumor Conference, Brain and Spine Metastasis Tumor Board and Neuro-oncology Multi-Disciplinary Clinic
  • For finalist hired, Allied Health credentialing through UCHealth medical staff office is required.
  • Hours: Day shift with evenings, weekends, and holiday rotation.
