About The Position

Join our pediatric pulmonary team at Children’s Hospital Colorado and make a meaningful impact on the lives of children with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. In this role, you will work as part of an interdisciplinary team focused on two major programs (1) Asthma, wheezing toddlers, and recurrent wheezing illnesses (2) Chronic respiratory failure with invasive or noninvasive ventilation dependence. You will primarily support the inpatient pulmonary consult service, providing expert evaluations, managing complex respiratory therapies, and participating in multidisciplinary rounds. You will also collaborate with the outpatient pulmonary providers, and coordinate transitions from inpatient to outpatient care. The section of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep medicine has 53 faculty members and is a multifaceted program, with on-going interests in asthma, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, sleep medicine, the pediatric airway and medical education. Our section has a significant research portfolio (clinical, translational, basic science) as well as a robust clinical portfolio with many quality and safety initiatives and expansion projects. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing or equivalent education as a physician’s assistant.
  • Licensed, or license-eligible to practice professional advanced nursing in Colorado, for PAs, Physician Assistant Certificate.
  • Registration, or ability to register with a State Board Agency of Nursing as an Advanced/Family Practice Nurse or Physician’s Assistant.
  • For NPs, acute care certification (AC) is required.
  • 5 years’ relevant pediatric experience as an advanced practice provider (for Senior Instructor Clinical Practice)
  • Knowledge appropriate for individuals working as an Advanced Practitioner/Physician Assistant
  • Skills in pediatric diagnostics and procedures as relevant
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record and proficiency in e-communication methods

Nice To Haves

  • Presently listed on the advance practice DORA registry in Colorado
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus
  • Inpatient experience a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide pulmonary consult services for hospitalized pediatric patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including comprehensive evaluations, formulation and implementation of treatment plans, daily follow-up, and documentation in the electronic medical record. You will have independent consulting responsibilities as well as shared APP/physician consultation when appropriate.
  • Manage and adjust respiratory therapies in collaboration with attending pulmonologists, respiratory therapy, and the primary care teams.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and communicate pulmonary recommendations to consulting and primary teams.
  • Monitor clinical progress, respond to changes in patient status, and support escalation or de-escalation of care as appropriate.
  • Recommend diagnostic tests and acute treatment plans, collaborate with the outpatient pulmonary providers, and coordinates transitions from inpatient to outpatient care.
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric pulmonologists and multidisciplinary teams, including hospitalists, intensivists, nursing, respiratory therapy, case management, and social work, to deliver coordinated, high-quality care.
  • Assist with discharge planning and care transitions, including coordination of home respiratory equipment and outpatient follow-up.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding pulmonary diagnoses, treatment plans, and home respiratory therapies.
  • Participate in education of residents, fellows, medical students, nursing staff, and other clinical team members as appropriate
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical pathway development, and programmatic efforts to improve patient outcomes, safety, and efficiency.
  • Support divisional meetings, performance improvement activities, and other departmental initiatives related to the pulmonary consult service.
