About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider in the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medicine. The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery patients. This position will have independent ambulatory practice at the UChicago Medicine offsite practices, including, but not limited to UChicago Medicine Hinsdale and UChicago River East.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.
  • Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).
  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares charts for clinic (i.e. obtaining IOE, outside records, pre-charting).
  • Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician in outpatient settings.
  • Holds regular cosmetic injectable clinics/tattoo nipple areola.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication, typically with physician approval.
  • Coordinates patient and family education needs with staff, case managers, and other clinical personnel.
  • Assists in the outpatient setting in assessing patient health status and needs.
  • Assists in team effort to prepare for and expedite the start of surgery in the OR.
  • Provides the appropriate preparation of the patient for surgery.
  • Provides appropriate preoperative and postoperative instructions, and facilitate discharge planning.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Completes rounding of postop patients when needed.
  • Participates in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Establishes and maintains a collaborative relationship with health care colleagues.
  • Demonstrates effective use of verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills using strategies that promote problem resolution.
  • Keeps knowledge base current by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences.
  • Assists in the outpatient setting in performing specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Assists the in- and out- patient teams in the development and implementation of comprehensive plans of care.
  • Follows through in the outpatient setting via communication with appropriate health care providers to assure that proper care and follow-up is provided.
  • Functions as a professional role model for staff while providing expert care in the in- and out- patient setting.
  • Promotes, has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical and psychological needs of adult and geriatric patients in both in- and out- patient setting.
  • Collaborates with care team members and multi-disciplinary team members to provide direct in- and out- patient care.
  • Serves as First Assist in offsite plastic surgery procedures as needed, including, but not limited to, breast reconstruction, tissue expanders, breast augmentations, abdominoplasties, and general plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
