About The Position

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) position is designed for qualified Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) to provide comprehensive care for adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This role involves managing pre- and post-operative care in a telemetry/step-down unit, performing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, and ensuring continuity of care within the Cardiovascular Center. The position requires collaboration with attending physicians and other care providers to coordinate clinical care, with a focus on patient education and documentation.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by ARC-PA.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner or as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or certification by the NCCPA.
  • ACLS and AHA Approved BLS certification required.
  • Current DEA registration required.
  • Independent procedural experience including incision and drainage, suturing, and wound debridement.
  • At least one year of recent experience caring for acutely ill patients in a hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in caring for patients across the continuum of care.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience interpreting cardiac testing, including echocardiography and cardiac catheterization imaging.
  • Recent surgical procedural experience and comfort performing bedside procedures.
  • Experience managing patients with Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD).
  • Demonstrated ability to order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies and develop care plans.

Responsibilities

  • Manage pre- and post-cardiac surgery patients in a telemetry/step-down unit setting.
  • Perform, order, and interpret advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with cardiac surgery.
  • Complete and document detailed histories and physical exams; present pertinent data to faculty.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
  • Educate patients and their families on disease management and surgical procedures.
  • Perform limited diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Discuss surgical procedures, obtain consent, and facilitate order entry and interpretation of pre-operative testing.
  • Maintain continuity of care and provide thorough hand-offs to oncoming shifts.
  • Confer with attending physicians and communicate with other care providers to coordinate clinical care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment.
  • Streamline the patient transfer process and communicate specific patient needs to team members.
  • Participate in peer evaluations and quality-assurance activities, support research projects, and other initiatives.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of medical principles, practices, standards, and techniques.
  • Participate in activities that promote professional growth and self-development.
