About The Position

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) in General Surgery at Fayette Physician Network is responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care to patients. This role involves conducting thorough health evaluations, coordinating care plans, and participating in the education of medical staff and students. The APP plays a crucial role in managing surgical patients throughout their hospital stay and post-discharge follow-up, ensuring a high standard of care and effective communication within the clinical team.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing or Bachelor's/Master's Degree as Physician Assistant.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers or certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Acute care, surgical, critical care, or trauma experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • ACNP or FNPs considered.
  • Master's level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for surgical patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post-discharge in the ambulatory setting.
  • Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/surgical evaluations.
  • Completes integrated assessments.
  • Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate in collaboration with surgical trauma faculty or following established clinical guidelines.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
  • Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests prior to discharge necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Performs necessary procedures following established clinical guidelines and protocols for vascular surgery and scope of practice.
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for surgical patients, including teaching, discharge planning, and necessary referrals.
  • Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.
  • Participates in physician rounds and consultations.
  • Identifies unstable or complex surgical patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Assists in the collection of outcome measures in the clinic setting.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the surgery patient/family teaching and collaborates with nursing and clinical staff in the education plan.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making.
  • Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
