About The Position

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skill, and/or ability desired. The individual must have working knowledge of procedures, strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to follow directions. The individual must possess experience in the trade and knowledge of ship terminology. The individual must demonstrate ability to interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels. Must be able to follow directions and work with limited supervision. Also, must be willing to develop other team members’ skill level.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of accumulated experience as an A Class Pipe Welder at Austal USA or similar demonstrating proficiency in the following: Demonstrates continuous proficiency and throughput on all assigned tasks
  • Must pass and maintain the following Submarine Certifications:
  • 4F SW Carbon
  • 4F SW Inconel
  • 5F SW Carbon
  • 6G SW Carbon
  • 6G SW Inconel
  • ERS Certification
  • Muss pass and maintain one of the following Submarine Certifications:
  • GTAW-Structural Stick SMA-Structural
  • GTAW-Chromium Allow
  • GTAW - Aluminum
  • OJT EB Training
  • Contramatic Ball Valve
  • Must have demonstrated a high level of pride in workmanship
  • Ability to take direction and follow instructions
  • Good mechanical aptitude with ability to produce consistent quality
  • Ability to inspect and correct basic weld pick-up without supervision
  • Willingness to repair another welder’s work
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination; good spatial orientation
  • Ability to consistently meet production deadlines
  • Ability to read and interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer’s handbooks, change orders and contract specifications to obtain weld sizing information and material edge preparation requirements
  • Ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workers
  • Ability to work shifts or overtime as required, must be flexible
  • Must keep occurrences at 4 or below
  • Ability to wear required PPE
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to and pass background check
  • High School Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience with comparable trade experience defined as five (5) or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, two (2) years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure preheat and interpass temperatures are maintained and the correct temp sticks are on the job site.
  • Know the maximum allowed heat input and the importance of calculating heat input correctly.
  • Identifying defects in open butt welds including root pass, filler and cap
  • Ensures all welding wire and gas tags are returned to the tool room at the end of each work shift
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality
  • Performing out of position welding for long durations
  • Understanding and following weld sequencing minimize weld distortion and 100% conformant
  • Welding continuous seams IWO frames and structure while maintaining quantity of open uninterrupted welding
  • Welding high quality and quantity for all positions without assistance
  • Welding with mirror while maintaining first time quality
  • Welding critical internal hull connections with first time quality while maintaining quantity of open uninterrupted welding
  • Proficiently performs to Austal USA construction guidelines and requirements as it relates to all required MDD’s for welding of different piping systems joints and structural related joints
  • Proficiently performs 1st time quality work on all types of fillet and groove welds for pipe and structure
  • Successfully welding all plate thickness with first time quality, regardless of position, joint type or configuration
  • Demonstrating continuous proficiency and throughput on all assigned tasks
  • Instructing and mentoring less-skilled welders, as assigned
  • Working with a sense of urgency, efficiency and productive output
  • Maintaining safe work practices and adheres to safety policies and procedures
  • Ensuring correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications
  • Maintain housekeeping, keep worksite free of rubbish, keep materials and equipment stowed in an orderly manner
  • Keeping waste of consumables and material to an absolute minimum
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality
  • Assists Welders, Fitters, Apprentices, and Trades Assistants with daily tasks as directed
  • Assists or work with other trades or Austal USA employees as directed (May be assigned tasks outside craft as required)
