About The Position

Advanced Production Melt Shop Operator (Internal Group 4 Openings: Caster, AOD, Gate and Crane, Furnace Operators) Flagship Aerospace and Orthopedic Metals Plant Rich 12% Quarterly Bonus (with track record of meeting/exceeding Bonus payouts!) Starting wage of $28/hr. (wide range scale, based on experience and performance) Shift Premium/differential: Shift Premiums: 2nd shift = $2/hr., 3rd shift: $1/hr. Advanced Production Melt Shop Operator Responsibilities Observe all job safety practices, manufacturing and technical work instructions. Accept assignments to a variety of melt shop jobs (after extensive on-the-job-training) and perform melt jobs on a primary or secondary basis including: Furnace and melting operations, AOD, Concast, Gates, Crane, Shearline and Inspection, and Refractory. Follow all manufacturing and technical work instructions and procedures. Maintain furnaces for maximum output. Verify charge weigh up against heat sheet, load charge weight on to conveying system, visually monitor the charge material as it feeds into furnace. Take samples of molten metal as specified, prepare for delivery to the metallurgical lab for testing. Make minor furnace repairs. Repair or patch furnace linings. Assist maintenance on major repairs of conveying and furnace equipment. Inspect readiness of ladles. Operate computerized control panel for continuous caster system according to caster manual and monitor system for various parameters, such as: Alloy type, Withdraw velocity, Withdraw distance, Withdraw-to-backstroke dwell, Backstroke distance, Backstroke dwell, Mold Temperature Hi and Low settings, and Water Temperature Delta Hi and Low settings. Prepare caster, tundish and other equipment for casting including removing metal build up. Ensure that ladles and slide gates are ready to receive molten metal at all times. Control the flow of molten metal into the tundishes. Understand when ladles need to be removed from service for cleaning or rebuild. Understand mechanical components of the slide gate system. Install refractory components into the slide gate system as needed. Operates crane for all tapping and transferring activities. Make data entries into computer database and maintain other records and reports as required. Maintain good housekeeping and cleanliness of the department. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor/Area Manager.

Requirements

  • High school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • Foundry or experience in a related manufacturing occupation preferred.
  • Safety conscious with a good safety record.
  • Be dependable with a good attendance record.
  • Must have ability to learn mechanical, trouble shooting and mathematical aptitude (with appropriate on-the-job-training).
  • Decision making ability - can comprehend multiple variables and take appropriate action without close supervision.
  • Must be able to physically work in an extreme heat stress environment with exposure to molten metal, dust and fumes and ability to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment required for the position.
  • Must be physically capable of performing heavy manual duties, operate a variety of machinery and equipment and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able and willing to accept rotating job assignments involving a variety of melt shop tasks.
  • Able to operate a powered industrial truck.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Decision making ability under stressful / adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to read technical work instructions.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment.
  • Computer skills – need to be able to understand basic commands, operate required software applications.
  • Ability to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment required for the position.
  • Must be willing to work overtime without prior notice.
