About The Position

The Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician (AMLT) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves performing a variety of waived, moderate, and high complexity tests on biological specimens. The AMLT serves as a generalist in the laboratory, responsible for testing in all areas including Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Serology, and Urinalysis. This role requires independent operation of laboratory functions and adherence to quality control measures, ensuring accurate and timely evaluations of laboratory results.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Completion of an accredited educational program in medical laboratory technology.
  • Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from recognized organizations such as ASCP or AMT.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in a laboratory setting.

  • Knowledge of laboratory information technology systems.
  • Ability to plan and administer continuing education programs for laboratory staff.
  • Experience with quality management activities in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced blood banking tests such as antibody titers and elutions.
  • Conduct advanced microbiology tests including Mycobacterium identification and sensitivities, Mycology identification, and Polymerase Chain Reaction testing.
  • Independently operate the full range of laboratory functions on irregular tours.
  • Administer tests and laboratory procedures, recognizing and defining testing problems.
  • Evaluate procedures to determine the suitability of specimens for analysis and request new specimens if necessary.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis while maintaining physiological properties.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed for requested laboratory tests.
  • Verify patient identity and prepare reagents and primary reference material.
  • Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures.
  • Consult with physicians on additional tests that may be necessary to clarify problems.
  • Maintain record-keeping systems and ensure compliance with quality standards.
