The Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the development of new products; work in a cross-functional development or advanced development group; manage a variety of tasks and activities in this dynamic environment; and solve complex problems where no precedence exists.

  • Conduct advanced development tasks to inform NPDI teams designing new cooling systems for high density computer rooms.
  • Collaborate across the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, as well as production and offering teams.
  • Work with these teams for design reviews, meeting cost metrics, and brainstorming around customer pain points.
  • Perform a variety of engineering calculations using traditional engineering methods to verify design requirements, which may include stress calculations, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems where little or no precedence exists - the use of ingenuity and creativity is regularly required.
  • Participate in identification of cost reduction opportunities and in the design and development of cost reduction changes.
  • Build prototypes to support the development of product design.
  • Plan and oversee proof-of-concept testing, then utilize the results to validate or modify designs, control methods, and analytical models.
  • Compile reports and design guidelines.
  • Scout technologies that could be implemented into Vertiv cooling systems.
  • Support Vertiv activities with University-Industry collaborations.
  • Interact with employees, outside vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or directly related degree at minimum.
  • Demonstrated record of meeting deadlines and project goals.
  • Understanding of electrical schematic and pneumatic drawings (P&ID).
  • Understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment independently and/or as a member of a dynamic team; offer and receive constructive criticism.
  • Demonstrated history of delivering quality products to market with understanding and respect for phases of the product development process.
  • Excellent project management skills and communication skills.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software, preferred CREO 4.0 and greater.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with analytical performance models.
  • Experience with 2-Phase heat transfer fluids, including 'natural' refrigerants.
  • Experience with 1-phase and/or 2-phase Liquid Cooling technologies.
  • Knowledge of psychometric chart and refrigeration cycles.
  • Basic knowledge of CFD and/or FEA software, preferred Ansys.
  • Understanding of manufacturing limitations, break sheet metal and formed copper tubes.
