About The Position

The Adult Services Manager will provide leadership for and manage staff and operations related to adult services at Vancouver Community Library, with a primary emphasis on adult programming and information services. These services include, but are not limited to, adult reference and reader’s advisory, adult programming, information services including TeleInfo and LibAnswers, and adult collection management. This position will work with the Branch Manager to support, plan, and implement adult-focused programs; oversee adult collections in support of service and programming goals; and participate in the management of the branch. This position will also represent the branch and library district in the community and will be integral in sustaining positive relationships with adult patrons, service partners, and community organizations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related public library experience, including adult services, programming, and reference or information services.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory experience, with experience managing people and/or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Control, lead operational and budget planning; help monitor expenditure of staffing and operating costs of the branch and participate in strategic planning for the district.
  • Responsible for building and sustaining positive relationships with service partners, community organizations, and adult learners.
  • Oversee branch adult services operations, including responsibility for staff, adult reference and reader’s advisory, adult programming, information services (including TeleInfo and LibAnswers), and adult collection management.
  • Supervise assigned staff and provide direction to other branch staff as needed; train, mentor, evaluate and provide performance feedback; address performance problems; interview and hire staff; establish and model customer service expectations and ensure expectations are met.
  • Ensure coverage as needed by overseeing schedules for adult services and information service points and, if necessary, deploying staff and resources to accomplish tasks.
  • Respond to patron problems and community concerns, seeking to resolve them and provide positive outcomes.
  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons; refer questions as needed; provide instruction regarding library catalog searching, computer use, technology, and use of personal information devices; troubleshoot problems in person, by phone, and online.
  • Oversee and support information services delivery, including participation in and coordination of TeleInfo and LibAnswers services, ensuring consistent, accurate, and timely responses to patron inquiries.
  • Review and maintain adult collections to ensure they meet the needs of adult patrons and support programming, information services, and district priorities.
  • Coordinate local adult collection management in the context of a dynamic and centrally developed district collection.
  • Lead and collaborate with other branch staff to plan, coordinate, and implement adult programming, including educational, cultural, and informational programs, as well as district-wide initiatives.
  • Lead and attend meetings and participate in committees and organizations that further the library’s mission and goals.
  • Keep informed of current library, information services, and management practices by attending workshops and educational programs and reading specialized literature.
  • Participate in various committees, work groups, and task forces for library and community projects or initiatives related to adult services and information services.
  • Compile statistics and prepare regular and special reports related to adult programming and information services, including TeleInfo and LibAnswers activity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
