About The Position

The Adult Learner Transition Specialist at South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) serves as the primary contact for Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) Transition Studies students. This role is crucial in guiding students through the college's processes and services, ensuring they successfully transition to college-level pathways. The position emphasizes equity and inclusion, aiming to create a supportive environment for a diverse student population.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of and experience with promoting equity and inclusion.
  • One year of experience working with low-skilled adults, immigrants, refugees, or other Basic Education for Adults populations.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and desktop publishing software.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as a team member.
  • Understanding of different cultures and/or knowledge of other languages.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with educational or career advising for adult learners.
  • Experience teaching BEdA students and/or I-BEST.
  • Knowledge of or experience with CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems).
  • Knowledgeable of community college academic and student services.
  • Knowledgeable of community resources and services.

Responsibilities

  • Approach work with an equity lens to create a barrier-free and inclusive environment for students.
  • Conduct educational pathways navigation sessions to assess adult learner abilities and readiness.
  • Create and provide accessible information regarding college pathways for ABE, ESL, HS+, I-BEST, and pre-college sequences.
  • Assist Transition Studies students with intake and admissions forms, and monitor their progress.
  • Plan and facilitate student intake, orientation, and enrollment for new and transitioning students.
  • Coordinate with faculty regarding course enrollment and student progress, providing retention services as needed.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach for Transition Studies students, assisting with goal achievement and study skills.
  • Assist students with college processes, including admissions and financial aid options.
  • Develop and maintain student records and prepare reports as required.
  • Collect and report data on services and outcomes for Adult Learner Transition Specialist activities.
  • Promote Transition Studies programs through workshops and collaboration with marketing.
