About The Position

The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) provides safe and temporary housing for youth ages 10 – 18 with pending legal action in the Cook County Courts. The JTDC is dedicated to providing its youth with leadership, structured care, and supervision through a balanced approach of creative programming and services that teach responsibility, accountability, and sensitivity. Each member of the JTDC staff is actively encouraged and supported in pursuit of creative participation, personal well-being, and professional development. As the largest juvenile detention center in the nation, the facility contains five major departments and various offices consisting of 600+ employees who serve an average daily population of 280+ residents. The Admissions and Release Specialist I will perform duties within the office of the Admissions/Release Department. This position entails exercising discretion, sound judgment, and personal initiative to determine and implement the proper approach or action to take routine situations relative to the daily activities of the Admissions/ Release Department. This position requires the ability to work various shifts, including nights, overnights, weekends, and holidays in a 24-hour facility.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. test certificate required.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate Degree, preferably in relation to area of assignment OR an equivalent combination of education, training and professional work experience pursuant to acquiring the knowledge, skills and capabilities indicated herein preferred.
  • United States citizenship.
  • 21 years of age at the time of application submission.
  • Illinois residency obtained within 90 days of date of hire.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check including but not limited to LEADS, CANTS, and professional references.
  • Must pass Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screening requirements.
  • A result of negative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Abuse Registry.
  • Must be able to work any shift at a 24-hour facility (includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays) and ability to work overtime as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Follows JTDC Policy and Procedure.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding past and current residents and their records in accordance with JTDC policy and procedures.
  • Creates and maintains files, make copies and answer phone calls/messages and address them appropriately.
  • Continuous management of various clerical activities; e.g. verify court documents, notify appropriate staff of court decisions, data entry into the Resident Management Information System (RMIS) and admission board, filing, copying, etc.; all in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Responsible for working the release and admissions area; this will include, but is not limited to: following JTDC Policy and Procedure on admissions and release of residents, responding appropriately to questions from the public; from other JTDC staff, from stakeholders at the walk up window and via incoming phone calls, and being exposed to residents being admitted and/or released from the facility.
  • Acts as a liaison with court and other agencies, also addressing public relations concerns with a high level of professionalism and according to JTDC policy and procedures.
  • Coordinates residents’ transportation needs with the appropriate units (i.e. Sheriff Dept. or JTDC).
  • Operating knowledge of designated systems (CFIVE, Odyssey, Resident Management Information System, etc.) to confirm accuracy/clarity of court documents.
  • Runs daily reports (Court, Admission, Release etc.) and reviews hard files to check the accuracy of the reports.
  • Updates files/records/reports with accurate information as discovered.
  • Confers with and takes direction from the department leaders to assist with daily operations; and the installation of regular, periodic, and special projects.
  • Maintains accuracy and security in the control, organization and maintenance of files and records, (electronic and hard files), according to JTDC policy and procedure.
  • Reviews Court documents to determine if documents are sufficient to meet the requirements for admission/release of the resident from JTDC.
  • Works with stakeholders to obtain the required, accurate documentation for admission/release of residents.
  • Must be able to multi-task and perform well under pressure.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and integrity in keeping resident’s property secure; release only the appropriate property to the resident or designated person.
  • Responsible for the accurate filing of residents closed records as well as the preparation of records to be transported to Rockwell for storage,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
