The City of Richmond is seeking bold, creative, curious individuals to contribute to the community through various internship opportunities. The current vacancies are in the City Council Office, Public Works - Civil Engineering Division, Department of Children and Youth, Information Technology, and the Finance Department. Interns will be paid for actual hours worked, and this is a part-time, hourly position with pro-rated sick leave but no other benefits. Training will be provided, and interns are at-will/exempt, meaning they can be released at any time.

  • Assist in the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, reports, memos, and estimates for various civil engineering projects.
  • Participate in field inspections to observe and document conditions and ensure work is being carried out according to specifications.
  • Collect and analyze data for traffic patterns, soil quality, water levels, or other relevant civil engineering projects.
  • Perform basic feasibility studies under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Help in the preparation and submission of permit applications related to engineering projects.
  • Produce and modify basic CAD drawings.
  • Use GIS systems to map out project areas and gather geospatial information.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of sustainability and environmental initiatives related to civil engineering.
  • Participate in internal and external training sessions and seminars as recommended.
  • Spend time with different sections of the engineering department to gain a holistic understanding of the department's functions.
  • Perform a wide range of policy, program, and administrative duties for members of the City Council.
  • Ensure equitable community engagement among various youth groups and organizations.
  • Support the creation of a funding program for youth-serving organizations.
  • Gather, analyze, and share data with community stakeholders.
  • Support management in regular and routine data analysis.
  • Assist with production of City of Richmond's television station KCRT programming.
  • Serve as a receptionist and first point of contact for clients, callers, and visitors.
  • Conduct surveys, program analysis, and data collection.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Current enrollment in a post-high school accredited academic, training, or technical institution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs.
  • Experience conducting research or knowledge of research methodology and techniques.
  • Experience working with public officials.
  • Education/knowledge in public policy, political science, or a closely related field.
  • Office or customer service experience.
  • Paid for actual hours worked.
  • Pro-rated sick leave.
