About The Position

This position provides leadership for GVSU’s peer tutoring and supplemental instruction programs, ensuring high-quality academic support for all students, as part of the university’s Knowledge Market. The role oversees staff and peer tutors, collaborates with faculty, staff, and campus partners, in close collaboration with other Knowledge Market centers and University Libraries’ colleagues, developing services that promote student retention and success across disciplines and fields university-wide through the Tutoring and Reading Center, drop-in tutoring, and, structured learning assistance. Salary & Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $58,800, commensurate with experience. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in higher education administration and/or academic support; preference given to candidates with experience administering tutoring-related programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across academic disciplines and student support areas.
  • Strong commitment to providing equitable, inclusive, and purposeful support to students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of academic preparation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in theories and practices that support the academic success of first-generation and underrepresented students.
  • Proven ability to provide constructive and supportive supervision to a diverse team of student employees, peer tutors, and professional staff.
  • Proficiency with technology systems such as Banner, Microsoft Office Suite, EAB Navigate, or comparable tutoring/academic support software.

Responsibilities

  • Manage university-wide tutoring in collaboration with key stakeholders and partners, including within the university’s Knowledge Market, ensuring a shared commitment to equitable, inclusive, and effective tutoring services for all students.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the Tutoring and Reading Center and represent the Tutoring and Reading Center in Knowledge Market leadership meetings.
  • Develop tutoring support services that address the needs of GVSU’s diverse student population, with focused attention on closing gaps in access and success for underrepresented students.
  • Collect and use data to make informed staffing decisions to ensure adequate and responsible coverage for the Tutoring and Reading Center and other drop-in centers, evaluate the impact of tutoring services on student academic progress, retention, and graduation, and use findings to make data-informed improvements in coordination with the Senior Director of the Knowledge Market.

  • Collaborate with academic units and faculty to support embedded tutoring and supplemental instruction models to improve course success rates, with direction from the Knowledge Market Senior Director and the Dean’s Office. This includes coordinating with relevant academic unit heads to ensure aligned scheduling of Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) sessions.
  • Serve as primary contact for Dual Enrollment SLA program.
  • Manage, review, consolidate, and update Tutoring and Reading Center administrative systems and processes in collaboration with the Knowledge Market Senior Director.
  • Support the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and evaluation of peer tutors; supervise the SLA program, including managing hiring, training, and supervision of SLA facilitators and student leadership team.
  • Assist the Knowledge Market Senior Director to coordinate and strengthen collaborative partnerships with colleges, faculty, unit heads, administrators, and colleagues to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of tutoring services, in collaboration with other center directors/administrative leads within the Knowledge Market.
  • Represent the Tutoring and Reading Center as needed, in coordination with the Senior Director of the Knowledge Market, on university committees.
  • Supervise daily tutoring operations including adequate staffing to meet student needs across disciplines and .managing the Tutoring and Reading Center’s presence at orientation, in coordination with the Senior Director of the Knowledge Market.
  • Coordinate Drop-In Tutoring Center Directors/Coordinators to align tutoring support services across centers.
  • Schedule and lead monthly collaboration meetings for Drop-In Tutoring Center Directors/Coordinators.
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, timekeeping, and evaluation processes for tutoring program staff in alignment with Knowledge Market practices and direction from the Senior Director of the Knowledge Market.
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
