About The Position

The Evergreen State College is seeking adjunct faculty colleagues to contribute to their undergraduate GIS Certificate program by teaching courses focused on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The adjunct faculty member(s) would teach one (or both) of the following 4 credit courses: GIS: StoryMaps and Apps, which involves using interactive apps for deploying maps on the web, and GIS: Field Data Collection, where students perform mapping and collect spatial data while working in a field research situation, often outdoors. New faculty members will be provided with a starting syllabus and modules of content, including lecture and lab scripts. Faculty in this curriculum will be expected to adapt and continuously improve the existing materials to maintain concurrency of the supplied materials and relevance with software version changes. Evergreen uses and teaches the Esri platform of ArcGIS and its extensions, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, Insights for ArcGIS, Business Analyst, Community Analyst, and other Esri applications. GIS courses are taught in the campus scientific lab, which accommodates 25 dual monitor workstations. Evergreen students seek to apply their GIS knowledge in a variety of professions including natural resource management, conservation, demographics, public policy, non-profit decision-support, and research disciplines. To be successful, GIS adjunct faculty should be able to teach undergraduate students in several of the following areas: managing geospatial data formats and interactions with the Esri geodatabase, creating layers and maps using diverse data types, introductory methods for analysis of spatial phenomena, design and deployment of mobile GIS methods, implementation of raster and elevation data types, and sharing maps and apps through StoryMaps and other Esri templates for web dissemination. Faculty are expected to engage with students in their individual mapping projects and advise students in the creation of GIS portfolio material showing student accomplishment of learning goals. Faculty members are often asked to help students develop projects in their own research and community interests. Candidates should be able to provide and demonstrate examples of their own work in GIS, using interactive apps such as StoryMaps or Dashboards. Though not required, a digital portfolio would provide useful indication of the candidate's level of knowledge and skills in the practice of GIS. This is a two-quarter adjunct faculty position with primary teaching responsibilities in the evenings. Successful candidates may be eligible for additional teaching opportunities as we continue to build our GIS program.
