The Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences (MAS) at Harris-Stowe State University is creating a pool of potential adjunct instructors to teach mathematics, statistics, introductory computer programming, and/or data sciences. Courses in Statistics use the R statistical language and courses in data science use Python. Appointments are for immediate and upcoming semesters on an as-needed basis semester to semester. Generally, an adjunct instructor will teach a minimum of one course per academic year.

  • Prepares and delivers lectures, leads discussions, and performs other activities which are related to and meet course requirements for relevant MAS course(s).
  • Maintains course syllabi and provides each student with a written statement of course requirements at the beginning of each semester.
  • Conducts appropriate evaluations of student's performances and assigns grades on the basis of such evaluations.
  • Maintains and provides reports and/or records of student grades and attendance according to University requirements.
  • Becomes familiar with, utilizes and/or adheres to institutional and college tools and policies, including the Canvas Learning Management System, attendance, grade-reporting and record-keeping.
  • Attend adjunct-specific orientation meetings with the Dean, Chair, Adjunct faculty-liaison and/or with the institution.
  • Doctorate or a Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related field from an accredited university.
  • Eighteen (18) credit hours of graduate level coursework must be related to the area of instruction.
  • Strong understanding of the pedagogies of University level teaching, particularly for first generation University students.
  • Good Knowledge of principles and theory of teaching field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with students and University community.
