About The Position

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Adjunct instructor in the Life Sciences Department. TheAdjunct Instructor, Life Sciences is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management in an efficient and effective manner for courses in the Life Sciences department. Courses taught includes continuing education courses (such as BioWork), curriculum courses associated with the Biotechnology AAS (associate in applied sciences) degree program, summer camps for middle schoolers and high schoolers, and/or customized industry training. The Adjunct Instructor will work closely with his or her Program Director and other faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the Science and Math Guided Career Pathway and its students. More specifically, and consistent with the terms and conditions of appointment as stipulated in the contract of employment. This posting is part of a pool recruitment process, which means we are collecting applications for potential openings that may arise during the academic year. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline completed.
  • At least two years' pharmaceutical or biomanufacturing experience required.
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System
  • Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction
  • Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical/biomanufacturing equipment and upstream/downstream processing (i.e. cell culturing, molecular biology techniques, bioreactors, scales-balance, filtration, liquid extraction, higher purity filtration, autoclave, incubator, ph meter, and lab equipment).
  • Knowledge of CGMP's and ISO (International Standards Organization).
  • Familiar with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) policies and pharmaceutical CFR regulations.
  • Familiar with workplace safety hazards.
  • Ability to be innovative, creative, and motivated as well as organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks
  • Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups
  • Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
  • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to move between classrooms, buildings, and campuses
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas
  • Ability to lift, at times, 10 lbs.
  • Good eye/hand dexterity
  • Infrequent travel between buildings on campus, to other campuses, or locally or out-of-town to attend conferences and professional development.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Prior BioWork or Biotechnology teaching experience within any NC Community College preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accessible, quality learning experiences for all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, hybrid, academic success, and/or interdisciplinary capstone courses as needed at any of Durham Tech's instructional sites
  • Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accord with the stated objectives of the course
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and Curriculum Developer to ensure that the courses are meeting the needs of business and industry
  • Collaborate with the Life Sciences Career Development Specialists to coordinate industry guest speakers for courses
  • Coordinate needed tutoring sessions for students with the CAE tutors
  • Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms
  • Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations
  • Learn the college's Learning Management System (Canvas) and other virtual platforms, such as Canva, Quizizz, Quizlet, etc., to deliver effective, high-quality learning experiences in the classroom, lab and online
  • Partner with other areas of the college to deliver customized training courses as needed
  • Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities to stay abreast of best teaching practices, technology used in the classroom or online, and trending industry practices
  • Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Life Sciences Program Director and Dean in meeting the needs of the institution.
