About The Position

The American Studies/Media & Communications Department at SUNY Old Westbury regularly seeks to hire adjunct instructors to teach courses as needed. The American Studies/Media & Communications Department offers a B.A. in Black Studies, and many of our courses serve Old Westbury's general education curriculum. Candidates for adjunct positions should have a record of high-quality teaching. We are seeking applicants for the Spring 2026 semester who can teach foundational courses in African American History, such as Introduction to African American Studies, African Americans in Mass Media, and U.S. Social Movements, among others. If you are qualified to offer other relevant courses in your own area of specialization, please indicate this in your letter of application. If you have experience with non-traditional formats (online or hybrid), please also indicate this in your letter.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Black Studies, American Studies, American history, or equivalent degree in a related field.
  • An ability to teach courses in the fields of Black Studies, African American history, and/or the African diaspora.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching courses in Black Studies and/or the African diaspora.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student body.
