About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking adjunct faculty to teach online for its Spanish and World Languages/Cultures program. UMGC is a mission-driven institution with seven core values, primarily "Students First," serving 90,000 adult learners globally, including 55,000 active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, veterans, and family members. The typical UMGC student is an adult learner balancing a career, family, and other priorities, with approximately 80% working full-time, half being parents, and half being minority students. UMGC is a global, 24-hour institution committed to providing flexibility and options for adult students. The adjunct faculty role involves actively engaging students, guiding them in collaborative and project-based learning, providing constructive feedback, demonstrating subject-matter expertise, and offering feedback on curricular improvements. The position involves teaching various Spanish language courses, including Intermediate Spanish I (SPAN 211), Intermediate Spanish II (SPAN 212), Advanced Spanish I (SPAN 311), Modern Spanish-Speaking Cultures (SPAN 314), Business Spanish I (SPAN 418), and Business Spanish II (SPAN 419). These courses aim to improve linguistic proficiency, cultural awareness, and communication skills in diverse personal, professional, and business contexts within the Spanish-speaking world.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Spanish, Spanish language pedagogy, Spanish linguistics, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching the Spanish language.
  • Experience teaching business Spanish and cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, with demonstrated ability to teach entirely in Spanish.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred
  • Terminal Degree in Spanish Language or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
  • Provide feedback to your program director on possible curricular improvements.
