About The Position

The University of the District of Columbia, a public land-grant institution that provides quality, career-focused undergraduate and graduate programs, seeks a Medical Director in Paramedics. This role includes developing a new program at UDC-CC with an expected first cohort acceptance in the fall 2026 semester. The Medical Director provides medical oversight to ensure full compliance with the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) Standards and Guidelines and supports the academic, clinical, and operational integrity of the program as it advances toward Letter of Review (LoR) and CAAHEP accreditation. The Medical Director serves as the program’s principal clinical authority, responsible for oversight of medical content, clinical competency, and patient care standards within the Paramedic Education Program. The Medical Director works collaboratively with the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator, faculty, and institutional leadership to ensure that the program meets or exceeds national standards in paramedic education and prehospital patient care. This is a contractual, part-time, non-tenure appointment. Compensation is negotiable and aligned with institutional budget policies, funding availability, qualifications, and scope of engagement.

Requirements

  • Be a licensed physician (MD or DO) in good standing in the District of Columbia.
  • Be board-certified or board-eligible, preferably in Emergency Medicine or EMS Medicine.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of teaching methodologies appropriate for medical education and pre-hospital emergency medicine.

  • Have documented experience in out-of-hospital emergency care and EMS quality improvement systems (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical oversight for the Paramedic Program, ensuring instruction and evaluation of patient care reflect current, evidence-based EMS and medical practice standards.
  • Review and approve medical curriculum content, including didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field internship components.
  • Ensure course objectives, psychomotor competencies, and patient contact requirements meet CoAEMSP minimum standards and applicable local and state EMS regulations.
  • Participate in curriculum development and review of clinical and field internship objectives to ensure medical accuracy and relevance.
  • Verify that students demonstrate competency in clinical decision-making and patient management prior to program completion.
  • Participate in student evaluation through direct or indirect observation in skills labs, simulations, and clinical or field settings.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure the validity, reliability, and consistency of clinical evaluations and competency assessments.
  • Serve as a clinical consultant and mentor to faculty, preceptors, and clinical partners.
  • Assist in the selection, orientation, and ongoing evaluation of clinical and field preceptors to ensure consistent patient care standards and evaluation practices.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, advisory committee meetings, and clinical site visits as required for CoAEMSP compliance.
  • Contribute to accreditation efforts, including preparation of the Letter of Review (LoR), CoAEMSP Self-Study Report (LSSR), and site visit readiness.
  • Review, approve, and co-sign accreditation-related documentation requiring Medical Director attestation.
  • Provide quality assurance input and participate in the Program Evaluation Plan in accordance with CoAEMSP Standard IV.
  • Participate in CQI processes, including review of student outcomes, certification exam pass rates, graduate performance, employer feedback, and patient care outcomes.
  • Advise on remediation strategies and curricular improvements informed by outcome data and current EMS research.
  • Ensure that clinical and field operations comply with institutional policies and all applicable local, state, and national regulations.
  • Provide guidance related to infection control, patient safety, and medical ethics.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, institutional confidentiality standards, and risk management policies.
  • Written approval of medical curriculum and course syllabi.
  • An annual written report summarizing medical oversight activities, , and recommendations for program improvement.
  • Attendance at a minimum of two (2) advisory committee meetings per academic year.
  • Review and sign-off on student competency verification prior to graduation, in collaboration with the Program Director and Clinical Coordinator.
  • Participation in accreditation site visits, faculty development sessions, and required CoAEMSP documentation reviews.
