About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking adjunct faculty to teach on-site at Shaw Air Force Base, SC, for the Social & Behavioral Sciences & Gerontology program. Specifically, the role involves teaching the Introduction to Social Sciences (BEHS 210) course. This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the study of society, aiming to use combined perspectives of different social science disciplines to better understand the nature of society. Topics covered include research methods, ethical considerations in research, and the relationships among various social sciences, along with an analysis of social phenomena that integrates insights from these fields. UMGC is a mission-driven institution dedicated to adult learners, including a significant population of active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, veterans, and family members. The university emphasizes flexibility and options for its students, many of whom balance careers, families, and other priorities. As an adjunct faculty member, the expectation is to be a scholar-practitioner, actively engaged in your professional field while guiding students. This involves fostering student engagement through frequent interaction, motivating them to succeed, and conveying enthusiasm for their learning. Faculty are also expected to guide students in collaborative, problem- and project-based learning, provide constructive feedback using rubrics, demonstrate current subject-matter expertise, help students connect concepts across their academic program, and offer feedback to their program chair on potential curricular improvements.

Requirements

  • Master’s in Social Science, or a related field, from an accredited institution of higher learning is required.
  • Professional experience in behavioral sciences or related field.
  • Successfully complete our online two-week new faculty orientation, FacDev 411, as a condition of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred.
