About The Position

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) to teach a community-based Private Pilot Airplane Ground School program. This course provides foundational knowledge required for the FAA Private Pilot Airplane Knowledge Test and prepares students for further flight training toward the FAA Private Pilot Certificate. The instructor will deliver structured classroom instruction using FAA-approved training materials and NJIT’s aviation education resources, ensuring students gain the knowledge, discipline, and safety mindset essential for success in aviation.

Requirements

  • FAA Certified Flight Instructor (Airplane) with current CFI certificate in good standing.
  • In-depth knowledge of FAA Private Pilot Airplane Airman Certification Standards (ACS) and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
  • Strong teaching, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a safe, professional, and supportive learning environment.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Nice To Haves

  • FAA Advanced or Instrument Ground Instructor (AGI/IGI) certification.
  • Prior experience teaching aviation ground school at a Part 61/141 flight school, university, or community program.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (aviation, aeronautics, education, or related field).
  • Familiarity with instructional technology and computer-based training resources.

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly ground school sessions (approx. 14-week program, 1 hour 20 minutes per week).
  • Provide engaging lectures, discussions, and problem-solving exercises using FAA handbooks, Airman Certification Standards (ACS), and applicable regulations.
  • Ensure all core knowledge areas for the FAA Private Pilot Airplane Knowledge Exam are covered, including aerodynamics and aircraft systems, flight instruments and performance, meteorology and weather services, navigation and flight planning, airspace, regulations, and procedures, aeromedical factors and human performance, safety, decision-making, and risk management.
  • Evaluate student progress through quizzes, practice exams, and participation.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to prepare students for the FAA Knowledge Test.
  • Offer mentoring and aviation career guidance to students pursuing pilot certification.
  • Assist with syllabus development and updates in alignment with FAA standards and NJIT policies.
  • Maintain compliance with FAA ground training requirements and institutional teaching standards.
  • Promote a culture of aviation safety, professionalism, and lifelong learning.
